I've always been baffled by one of the first rolled papryuses you encountered in Thief: TDP, if it isn't the first. I am referring to the one in Lord Bafford's library in the TDP mission Lord Bafford's Manor.
Reading the scroll we learn of Lord Bafford's involvement in the sale of an illegal narcotic. Apparently the pagans are involved, given the accent of Dominic, author of the scroll, but perhaps not. Dominic spends the entire scroll telling Bafford about the problem with the drug and then adds the line:
"About your Victoria, nothing yet. She walks an inch above the ground for all the dirt of her footprints I've found."
I generally make several assumptions, that this was an earlier spelling of Viktoria, Constantine's right hand. After all, If memory serves, the Viktoria spelling does not appear until the second game. We know from readings during the TDP mission Assassins that Viktoria was involved with the local Wardens, thought by them to maybe have warden aspirations.
So if this is the Victoria in Bafford's letter is Viktoria how was she involved with him. Did she need something and have a tyrst with him to steal it and then she disappeared from him? Is there any minor connection between this early, obsecure scroll and the larger story of Viktoria's public front during the first game? I've always wondered, there was never any follow up or clarification about this.

from ramirez' dossier (found in his money room)
Quote:
Viktoria
Independent fence, previously Raputo's. Dominates include thiefs-pawnage of exotics, medicinals. No known organization; contact with second-tier nobility, Grand Library, and Order of the Vine. May have warden aspirations.
i believe viktoria has been decided as the canonical spelling, and i would imagine that dominic spells it that way because he has never seen viktoria's variation on the name spelled out, only ever spoken to him. bafford probably doesn't trust her, or ramirez, who bafford presumably works for (there's some correspondance in bafford's hidden study, as well as ramirez' study above his library, that attests to this) has delegated finding out about viktoria to bafford.

The note refers to Bafford's attempt to find out something more about Viktoria than the slim information "Viktoria:
Independent fence, previously Raputo's. Dominates include thiefs-pawnage of exotics, medicinals. No known organization; contact with second-tier nobility, Grand Library, and Order of the Vine. May have warden aspirations. "
Dominic seems to be one of Bafford's enforcers. Vik is cutting into Bafford's business and the "She walks an inch above the ground for all the dirt of her footprints I've found." Is saying that Dom cannot find any trace of her that will give him any leverage or other information.

Interesting. Thanks to both of you. I have some serious rereading of several scrolls ahead of me. I've only read each of them a hundred thousand times so now I'm wondering what my problem has been.
It's still neat, this is a typically subtle treat that the game throws at us. A sub-plot that's already played out before the game starts that is only referenced in letters. I like.
theBlackman on 29/8/2006 at 08:08
The same problem most of us had. Focused on the game, and not understanding the subtlies in the various notes, scroll, and books, we ignore them *even though there are sometimes important clues* and try to "Beat" the game instead of playing it as if we were Garrett and using all the information we find as we go along.
The intriquing part of the game is the clues and leadins to the Future game *TMA* that were scattered in TDP.
Replay brings on the DOH feeling when the brain really starts to connect all the seemingly useless info.

Dreckboun is Bafford's gambling house. The Hammers raided it and took prisoners from the raid to Cragscleft.

I can`t find several of those scrolls (or maybe books) in Thief Gold mission Bafford`s Manor.
The first one is called m2tax.str and can be found in books.crf -> english:
Code:
page_0:"Lord Bafford,
I write to you to remind you of your duties to your Baron and your \
city. Surely you do not expect that the payment you sent on the first \
of the month are the entirety of your taxgelt - or do you think the \
Baron is unaware of your gambling houses? Let me remind you of the \
example made of Lord Brynveran, and assure you that the penalties for \
concealment of income are as harsh today as they were in Brynveran's \
time. The main difference, of course, is that today, the inspectors \
receive a bounty and are even more enthusiastic in their duties."
page_1: "The \
Baron waits for the remainder of your taxgelt. I advise that you not \
leave him waiting too long.
Julian Friehalt
Commissioner of Taxes "
The second one is called m2ginny.str and again can be found in books.crf -> english:
Code:
page_0: "Dominic:
A couple things I'd like you to look into.
First, if you could give Ginny a chat and put some Fear of Flattening \
into him, I'd much appreciate it. I don't know who he thinks he's \
taffing around with, but this Dreckboun thing is too much. Ginny's \
been a good cadge for years now, so I'll give him benefit of the \
doubt, but not for much longer.
Next, there's a new thiefs-pawn \
turned up, operating in the north districts, name of Victoria. She's \
made quite a few connections, and I don't want to think she'll be \
getting ambitions of moving in. See if you can dig up any leverage \
on her - best to have some insurance."
page_1: "Finally, there's the business I \
spoke to you about before. I know you're a busy man, but Ramirez's \
prices are a bit steep for simple matters such as debtors.
Would you consider..."

Could you put this phrase in simpler words for me, please?:erg:
And what is the meaning for "gelt" and "doctor the docs"?
Sorry for the silly question.:erm:
