At the entrance to the area where all the Mages are in Thief Gold( and some of the keeper medallions) there is a book which I cannot read all of it.
It seems that due to some editing difficulties or whatever ( I have the German version, so I don't know if the English version is complete) there seems to be some part of the written text missing.
Can somebody tell me the complete text of that book, please?
(It is the book where one keeper tells of how they were suddenly attacke by fireelementals. Some Keeper called Hodge suffers severe burns because of that and dies.)

Can't give you the exact text, but the message says that the elementals seem to be attracted by the Fire Talisman.
This more or less means:
When you have the talisman in your possession you will attract the Fire Elementals. So when you find it be very careful.
Thanks for the help, but that's not the book I mean.( I think)
I can read part of it, I just want to read the parts that are deleted ( or whatever).
It would be fanatastic if someone could either post a transcription of that book.
I am talking about the book near the dead keepers, the keeper medallion and the FIRST mage you encounter in the Lost City.

If you're talking about the mage in the SE then I can help you... (not now because I'm in Windows 2000 and Thief doesn't run in 2000, later I can switch to 98 and find out) (dual boot computer) yet there are some other spoilers I can tell, of many levels but lets start w/ the Lost City. :thumb:
I played this map on Expert and did pretty well a week ago. I bought just a few cheap necceities: a good amount of arrows (for unsuspecting fire elementals), some water arrows (for alert elementals), a health potion, two or three rope arrows, and I'd recommend buying the papyrus (if you find some masks in the city; 2 in mideast building, and one in south-west building; you can get some serious cash).
I entered the city through the normal route that you enter at the NE end w/ the building of scrolls. I continued south exploring buildings as I went for loot and arrived at the middle section. From there I went east and raided the place. Next I used the tunnels on the eastern side of this building to take me to the South eastern section. This is where that mage was I believe. In this building is the WATER TALISMAN and a lever which is useful later in the level.
Next I retraced my steps (new monsters for visiting the king along the way to be wary of) to the mid section and headed south. Here picked up some loot and made my way to the South western building. Pick up some loot here and in the basement there is some machinery: insert the lever you picked up from the water talisman building and use it: this extends a bridge which is most useful. Follow this north, pick up the other keeper medallion and head towards the tower still to the north.
Looting the tower you will find a broken stairway, go -carefully- out the window on the ledge and go to the (3 o'clock side) by moving counter clockwise. Use a rope arrow on the middle wooden beam and jump in side. This level contains the FIRE TALISMAN. :D
FOR A QUICK EXIT: Now if all the objectives are complete except leave the city go back to the ledge again. Use the beams and a rope arrow to get to the roof. On the north end past the lava expance you will see a opening in the wall. The floor of the opening looks like this:
______________
\
\
\
\
|
Anyway the slanted part is stone but the good news is the top part (floor) is earthen and can handle a rope arrow: you're in the perfect place for the arch to be right... practice with some broadheads untill you get the right aim, then use a rope arrow so it looks like this: |\
| \
| \ <--- Arrow
| \./
| \----------
Rope---> | \
| \
| \
(please excuse my drawing)
This will be a good time for a quick save: the idea now is to get a good head start and 1: use a speed potion to jump the expanse and grab the rope or 2: Bunny jump (running while continually jumping) to get enough speed to make it to the rope.
-This may take MORE THAN ONE try!-
Once you pull yourself up then follow the path until you get to the waterfall and there you will have beaten the level. :cheeky:
Just had to get out my discoveries!

OH! NO! my drawing in the last post got messed up! The idea is the arrow sticks in the 'earth' and is angled towards you... that way a rope hangs over the edge and you can grab it.
Oh well!

Yes... I will have to apologize for being late... uh erm... wow never been this late before four years and three months late! . Well if this is still of interest to you I've posted it here so I may be at rest with myself. The text that you were interested about the first keeper mage in the lost city who spoke of another "Hodge" being badly burned by fire elementals:
"We've been careful to avoid the roaming elementals throught out sojourn, but today we've taken a serious blow. From out of nowhere, a number of them assaulted the troupe. We fended them off with our remaining supply of water cystals, but the price was heavy. Hodge was relentlessly burned and may not live through the night. Both Yannnis and Abner and dead."
"Hodge died this morning. I tried desperately to care for him, but to no avail. He was delirious and gibbering and he cried out in pain, clawing the alien abysmal ground beneath him. I tried to calm him, but when he grabbed my hair and pulled my ear close to his lips, he said one thing before expiring... burning water."
