I always thought that Pixar's stuff was hit-and-miss. I like something like half of what they put out. Liked The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Wall-E, and maybe another one that I'm forgetting. Wasn't crazy about Toy Story, but it wasn't quite bad. Couldn't stand Cars.

Basing a sequel off merchandise sales is pretty dumb. Typically its how well received the first film (or even game) was that determines whether people are going to jump at the second one in the series.
It`s soulless not dumb. Earning 10 billion is rather wise by any corporation`s standard.
Also, how i wish it was the critics/reception that decided fate of the sequels...heh, it`d spare us some torment...

No, I mean dumb. Merchandise sales really aren't the best indicator of whether sequels will be successful. While there may be correlation in some cases, the fact that the toys sold doesn't mean it will succeed.

Wow, it surpassed the original?
Its another strike against my faith in humanity. A small one relatively speaking, but it still doesn't speak well.

This is why I got my hands on the whole Teddy Ruxpin series for my son. Eventually he'll have to make his own decisions, but in the mean time I hope I can instill some form of the sensibility that i grew up with.

ITT: Adults bitch about kiddie movie.
(edit) Seriously, though... Has anyone here taken his/her kids to the theater to watch it and saw how they reacted to it? I have no reason to doubt that this particular movie hasn't worked on more mature levels as the other Pixar films did, but if the kids enjoyed watching it, you'd think it served its intended purpose.

Nice excuse for shitty writing and directing there. "kids will be all over it, all they care about are pretty images anyway!"
Also, many kids are not as thick as you'd believe. Maybe they're easier audiences leaving the theatre with a smile in all cases, but they surely won't be remembering Cars 2 over Up or Wall-E in 5 years.

Exactly. When have variations on the theme of "Well, the least discerning audience will eat it up!" ever been a good reason not to have a critical look at something? It's the same as "It's just a silly summer popcorn movie!" - that's no reason for it to be cynical, lazy and badly made, nor is it a reason to give anything a free pass.
