Combat. 27 games and it fits in 4k of cartridge ROM.
Edit: Civ 3 Gold is on Steam, isn't it? That should run great on a P3, it's not 3D accelerated, and it has decent multiplayer as I recall.

Civ 3 might be a good call, but that'll require the missus to get trained up on single player first methinks. Will suggest this to her. We're making the jump from chess, so I'm trying to think of something which isn't much more involved than that to start with. Kind of like a next step, but further into gaming territory. Something turn based is ideal as I can almost certainly out-twitch her with my 20+ years of gaming.

In my experience, chicks who like games tend to enjoy Civ, but YMMV. I have 0 experience with the multi in 2/3/4/5 so I don't know how great it is.

It's definitely the front runner.

Laugh you may, it's actually one of the choices in Skype's arcade game selection. We've been through them all, but couldn't do pong as she's on a trackpad.

Terraria?
Me and Sulph couldn't seem to connect and get a game going but if you figure out the IP and port stuff and whatnot I guess it might be a good one for you and the gf. You can BUILD a house and then PLAY house!
I dunno, me and Vernon had a helluva nice 15-20 minute hair-pulling inducing time getting Terraria to go multiplayer. It ain't for the faint of heart. Sure, people like us will go to extreme ends to get a gaming session up and running, but I highly doubt his gf will have the patience for it.

Terraria should be fine as long as Faetal is the host. As with most "manual" multiplayer games, all you need to do is:
* (If behind a router) Forward one port to your PC (31337)
* (Optional) Sign up for some dynamic DNS server like no-ip.com so you can just give her a hostname instead of an IP address. Configure said service after signing up.
* Start the game (if using a Firewall, tell it that everything is happy)
* Tell her to join your game. Give her your external IP or hostname from step 2.
So really, she just needs to do one simple step.
As for other games, I've always been a fan of the Age of Wonders series, which is currently on GOG. Rather enjoyable turn-based fantasy strategy vaguely simlar to HOMM or Master of Magic.

You can play snes games multiplayer with the zsnes emulator. My girlfriend and I did that on occasion when we would be long distance- playing mario games (it's a LITTLE too laggy for the more difficult levels) or rampart.

Ok. Got her to install Steam and I gifted her Civ III complete. We started our first game today. Most of it consisted of me telling her how to play, but we're off to a good start and she loves the fuck out of it, so good call for that suggestion.
Mostly, I'm just pissing myself laughing at her overly serious out loud over-personification of everything in her funny accent. While plotting to wreck her settlements (if you know what I mean etc...).
