does Thief (1) run/launch on a 486 CPU? Anyone tried?
===
my 1st Thief (1) hardware was:
some Pentium 2 (3xx MHz) CPU with BX chipset mobo.
graphics: Nvidia Riva TNT 1 (with 16 MB od SDRAM), and 2.xx Detonator drivers (I'm sorry to this day I didn't have 3DFX Voodoo 2/3 back then :( - even though they didn't have 32-bit color - unlike TNT). TNT2 with 32MB would be nicer, though..
(very important h/w piece for Thief series experience!!): Aureal Vortex 1 audio chipset (for A3D1 hawdware-accelerated 3D sound. No EAX crap!). Too bad it wasn't Vortex 2 with A3D2.
OS: Windows 95 OSR2 (bloody fast/memory efficient (for Windows); no Windows 98 bloated crap ;)).
64MB RAM (sufficient for Win 9x line).
(last but now least): 19'' CRT monitor (max res: 1600x1200 @85Hz :D).
That was in 1999. Guess I won't win anything..

I don't remember the system specs of the first PC I played Thief on, but I do remember the obscenely long loading times. The game itself ran smoothly, but the waiting between the action seriously hampered my overall enjoyment. I had the same problem with System Shock 2.
I put Thief away for a while then and didn't play it until much later...

Wow, that brings back memories. It would have to have been my first comp, which was a Micron P2 200mhz with some kind of S4 video card on Win 95. Played T1 and T2 on that. Don't recall any problems with FPS or anything, though admittedly it was probably too long ago to remember accurately.

Although I've never tried to run Thief 1 on 486 CPU, I believe that it'd be possible since Thief 1 never used an advanced instructions like MMX and 3DNow!, though they were already implemented in several CPUs of that time.

Do you mean S3?

Maybe one of those super 486-DX4 100 MHz machines could run the game if you could use it in conjunction with a 3d card like a Voodoo 2.

PII 350Mhz with 8Mb gfx card. Got Thief Gold for it.

I'm sorry I don't remember the spec but I've tried running Thief 1 on a Win98 (possibly originally 95) Toshiba Satellite laptop. The graphics card clearly wasn't up to speed but it didn't stop the machine trying. The result was basically what Thief would look like if Garrett took 6 tabs of acid with his morning tea a la Syd Barrett.

Very strange hardware configuration, I'd say: an expensive 3D card like Voodoo 2 and a budget CPU like 486/100 MHz:cheeky:.

That's right, a hardware's drivers are always as important as a hardware itself, if not even more.

I played it on my first PC, K6-2 233Mhz with 32Mb RAM and S3 Virge DX 4Mb videocard. Heck, i've even played through Unreal on it and graphics seemed astonishing!
Then came the System Shock 2 release... which required 3D Acceleration, doh. I saved money and bought ATI Xpert@Play 98 with 8Mb of onboard RAM. Unfortunately, the game required 48Mb of system memory and swapping during play never stopped :nono: I've completed it nonetheless.
