Watched a documentary about that recently. According to them, there's quite a few things driving it but the overarching issue is that having grossly inflated education costs is extremely profitable to everyone involved. Universities get to overpay their staffs and spend money on non-essentials, lending institutions and government get to make indentured servants out of people, and all the service providers benefit from the glut of students. The issue is that in the new "service economy" that was touted as the greatest thing since sliced bread in the 90's doesn't provide good enough jobs to pay these loans back. Hell, only one out of seven college grads last year has moved out of their parent's house.
