Hello there. I've been lurking on-off on the Thief forum here for a while but finally picked up the courage to join. I started off with Deadly Shadows which I utterly fell in love with, which got me into trying out Dark Project and the Metal Age (plus, I got them to work on Vista :D).
I'm not going to join in the Deadly Shadows slinging match, I do enjoy it and the artwork (Shalebridge Cradle  There's something about that place that makes me not want to play it, but strangely, I do...), but playing the first two in the series and then returning to the third does make the differences very clear. I got the impression that Garrett had turned a bit 'loose'(?) compared to TDP and TMA in sneaking up and whacking people, and lost the tension on drawing his bow (which actually threw me a bit). But it's no big deal. At least I still enjoyed it.
I guess that's my intro! I never understood why Garrett didn't moss arrow the bottom of his footwear, or maybe he just prefers stiletto heels for the 'big jobs'

Hello Burgundy. :)
Did you solve The Dark Project, or how far did you get?
Welcome to TTLG.

Hello :)
I've done the Dark Project at Normal difficulty, it did take me a while (I'm not a massively hardcore gamer - okay, I'm a coward) but I'll be picking it up again at a harder level at some point because I enjoyed it so much.
I got to the last level in the Metal Age, again at Normal, however, I ended up bored to my skull and with a hatred of Droopy cartoons (why is it so long!) so I admittedly haven't finished it, but I like to think I did
Deadly Shadows I completed first out of the three.
I'm interested in looking at fan missions too to hone my skills up. I love the soundtracks to the games too :)

Welcome Burgundy. It's probably a heresy but I very rarely go back to the OMs. To my mind fan missions are a lot more fun. And be sure to check out T2X if you haven't already. It's a stunner.

Hello and welcome Burgundy! Try this page for any questions you might have re: Thief fan missions. Very much worthwhile to visit all the sites listed since some contain FMs which the others don't.

Best to finish what you've started though; that way you'll get a real 'feel' for what the Thief universe is all about (greatly enhances your enjoyment as well and you'll be able to understand references made in the FMs to the original missions).
Have fun and stay awhile! :D

Well then, splendid news!
Would you agree (hands down) that The Dark Project is the masterpiece of the series? :ebil: just askin'!

I think that The Metal Age has some stellar levels. My favourites were Shipping and Receiving and Life of the Party ("Don't mind me, ladies, just coming through." - I wouldn't mind if Garrett popped through :ebil: )
Some just made me want to claw my screen to pieces (that bank level, the ones where you get the masks, the last level). It just dragged towards the end and when I started feeling the tedium I frankly couldn't give a hoot if Viktoria buggered off to her fate.
Deadly Shadows had the brilliant Shalebridge Cradle level, and I enjoyed House of the Widow Moira and Wieldstrom Museum, and it was the game that did get me hooked on the series to start with, however the difficulty level didn't seem to change for me until you hit Shalebridge (and Garrett couldn't decide which eyesocket to put his eye in, judging from the cutscenes).
The Dark Project, on the other hand, there weren't any levels that completely destroyed my faith in the game, but there weren't ones that stood out as much as, say, Life of the Party, so I'd say it was the better all-rounder, but a nice stand-out level would have done it (Return to the Cathedral was good).
Zombies are also fun.
So, I'd probably go with Dark Project first, then the first 10 missions of Metal Age joint with Deadly Shadows, and then the latter half of Metal Age. But then I'd like to try at harder difficulties, and wander into the morass of fan missions too.

Welcome, Burgundy! Always nice to see a new taffer! Once you make it through TDP, you'll have to try out some Fan Missions. There are some really creative people out there making a wide variety of missions.
