I just hope that we don't get to the point where game developers put trying to appease EVERYBODY ahead of their own artistic vision.
Bioware have been doing that for a while now, though they're getting a little bit better at writing these characters so they don't feel like something shoehorned in at the request of PR so much.
Every time Ubisoft tries to, it blows up in their face.

I don't remember there being any criticism of AC: Liberation related to the protagonist, nor of Evie in the upcoming AC: Syndicate. Could you be referring to Citra being a "magical negro" in Far Cry 3?
AC: Unity's criticism was related to a lack thereof in player character diversity, not in trying to appease people.

I can't find anything specific now, I just remember reading lots of angry people whine about how Ubisoft was either not doing enough or for "Exploiting Feminism For Easy PR".
Impossible to please, so maybe don't bother?

That's a bit simplistic. If an action aimed at pleasing 100,000 people on an issue which those 100,000 had previously been complaining about, ends up satisfying 90,000 of them, but the 10,000 remaining still complain, that doesn't mean there was a negative result. It definitely ought not mean that people shouldn't bother.
Yes it's hypothetical, but either way, you'd need to show that the 90,000 didn't exist or were insignificant in size to support the "why bother" rhetoric.

I'd still maintain that a company's PR having too much influence on creativity is a bad thing.
Just how bad is debatable, certainly some people knee-jerk so hard and make out like it's a crime against humanity or something, rather than just an annoyance.

PR (okay, it's actually probably marketing, because how many game companies have a legit PR department) is the one that comes up with stuff like saying that a game can't have a female protagonist ((
http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/20/publishers-rejected-remember-me-because-of-female-lead/) Remember Me). Diversity doesn't sell in their minds, so enjoy your choice of grizzled white brown-haired thirty something male protagonists. Apparently kids love grizzled white brown-haired thirty something male protagonists.
Also, people are ready to cry SJW these days on the slightest provocation. That Kingdom Come controversy is a good example. Someone wrote an e-mail asking whether people of colour would be in the game and someone talked about whether that would be plausible on their tumblr blog. That's it. Then Reddit picked it up and everyone was all, "Oh no, the evil SJWs are demanding developers put black people in their white medieval game. How dare they!"

I heard that Daniel Vavra defended Witcher 3/CDPR on social media but then became a target of the irrational PC brigade because of that.

I believe the same thing happened to Adrian Chmielarz, studio head of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter developer The Astronauts.

I'm just operating on second hand information from the RPS comments section, you probably know more than me about the issue.

At the end of the day, it's a small group of people snarking at each other (and occasionally doing worse things) on social media. If you want to be part of that culture war, go ahead.

Looks good! Though not really anything that hasn't been done before, gameplaywise.
