The combats have been a bit chaotic so far, but I suppose things will get easier once I learn some more effective spell combos.
QFASAA (maintain) -> Beam of Doom
ASRAA (maintain) -> Lightning/Frost Beam, slows and damages targets (freezes and extra damage to wet targets)
DDDRR (AoE cast) -> AoE Knockdown and Slow, also slows the targets' knockdown and getting back up animations.
As far as difficulty goes, Magicka is clearly meant to be played coop (aka. blow up your friends), as the monster difficulty and numbers are the same between single player and coop. It is still possible to complete in single player, you just have to work a lot harder.
As far as crossing streams go, you only want to cross streams with opposite elements once (for an achievement), but expect it to happen a lot anyway.

Cannon Fodder reference.
I noticed that too, in fact it was one of the things that made me buy this game. :p
I added my Steam username in my profile, so if anyone's up for some co-op fun, feel free to add me! I don't know how the co-op mode even works yet and how much time I'll have this weekend though...
The game seems to get better the more I play it, I'm still only in chapter 5, but I didn't expect the story to be this fun. :D I see a lot of references to other games and movies and stuff, some of them are really funny. The battles seem to get more and more difficult, and according to my friend who has played this game a lot more than I have, I'll soon hit the point where it's difficult to survive in single-player mode anymore. I've learned some useful spell combos, but unfortunately I find myself using the same few ray spells most of the time. So far I've found that it doesn't really matter which elements I mix as they all seem to be very powerful, so there's a lot of potential wasted there in my opinion.
I just found a machine gun. :p

Does the game ever tell you shift+left click enchants you weapon? Or that shift+Middle Click is your staff's active ability? If so, I missed it - makes the game a lot easier when you know that.
Fun, but odd and occasionally very frustrating. Discovering things like heal mines helps a bunch, but click middle instead of left and you prevent yourself from being healed for quite some time. Lots of power, and lots of ways to fuck up badly.
They've got references to everything in this, don't they? Just found the Master Sword from Zelda.

Figured out the first one myself.
You can also use that to send out energy attacks. For example, enchanting with ice will make your dude slam an ice ray" forwards. Basically, its your typical anime/japanese action game attack where they fling the energy forwards.

Question: Does Magicka have any staying power as a co-op game? A friend and I are looking for a new game to play. It seems fun, but hack & slash (or blast) RPGs can sometimes get old rather fast, humour notwithstanding.

Re: energy rays, I always use arcane to power up my AOE attacks. Nothing like instantly killing everything on the screen, although I guess it wouldn't be as effective in co-op.

Oh, it is every bit as effective in co-op. Which is kinda the problem.

I ONLY played it in coop. MANY times. I think it is where it shines the most. New DLC (Vietnam) is too short though. you could easily skip it and if you know somebody that bought it, HE can host a game for
everybody else,
ONLY the host must have bought the DLC. that's how I did it with a few friends.

I bought Magicka quite a while ago but haven't gotten around to actually playing it yet; can I take it the magic system is something like that in the old game Legend / Fours Crystals of Trazere?
