I hope this is the right forum but here goes........
I've been having great difficulty opening any readables for a while, but it's got much worse now. If I can open any of them (and it takes lots of attempts) I get at most a second to read.
Which isn't long enough.
I'm playing on a reconditioned Dell, W98, only used for Thief, and running all through Darkloader 4.3. I reinstalled everything a couple of months ago but no improvement. The one-second reading-time is new.
Please, does anyone have any suggestions? Diaries, scrolls, crumpled notes, even the Hammer/Mech doctrines are just so important, not just as clues but essential for atmosphere.
A myriad of thanks for any suggestions!

I assume you're fully patched? I've never heard of this problem before.

Yet another odd error. This is happening more than a couple times a week, now. More details, if you can think of any, please. The fact that it's been growing worse over time is the only clue, so far.

yes, fully patched. It is the same for TG and TMA, as well as all FMs (I forgot to mention that). I'm not playing T3

What happens if you set your game resolution to 640x480.
When you frob a button, do you hear a double-click?

Well it just got worse. Darkloader now just gives me an error message for all TG and T2 fms and oms.
So assuming something had self-destructed I tried to uninstall both games. Add/Remove programmes seemed to be working and said it had removed both, but they are both still there, in the same bloody place. Except that add/remove now can't find them.
I have just renamed both folders and reinstalled TG where it was before. It seems to be working better, even being able to read a scroll, except that there is only a black screen instead of the 'death' screen, so I can't get back into it without restarting the computer. This is ok, I can live with that (just staying alive works!).
I haven't tried reinstalling T2 yet. I think I need to find out how to remove the existing ones. They were both configured for no-cd, so the uninstall command on the cd won't work either.
How can I remove the earlier versions? I just hate going through all this rigmarole whenever Thief implodes, though after so many years I ought to be better at it.

Just deleting the folders should work.

I'd also suggest running something like RegCleaner or CCleaner in case there are any stray registry entries mucking things up. Had a similar problem with Darkloader recently and although I removed through Add/Remove, I forgot to do a search for Darkloader and manually delete leftovers before reinstalling.

Good point, nickie. While Thief itself doesn't store anything in the registry, I hadn't thought about Darkloader. I wasn't aware it did either, but sounds like you are. :)
