I don't care much for "timed" missions so not a big fan of Mission X.

Yeah, not sure why there's so much focus on Mission X here. IMO, it's not that representative of Thief as a whole, mainly because it doesn't even feature Garrett or any of the primary factions (and also the team oriented gameplay, as mentioned). It would seem to make more sense to use a multi mission FM if you're trying to release a standalone game. Something like 7th Crystal or Broken Triad or Black Frog would work better.

Quiet, little man. Grownups are talking.
The
reason this is a terrible thread is because what the Loupy original poster is proposing is illegal at worst, and unethical at best, since it would essentially allow playing Thief without paying for Thief. It's directly analogous to how the original Doom editor was released with the explicit stipulation that the created WADs not be compatible with the shareware version of the engine. And of course, as has already been pointed out, the Dark Engine is NOT open-source in any sense of the term.

Seems like a pretty pointless idea to me. Thief nowadays can be gotten very cheaply from GoG or Steam. There's very little to gain from releasing a mission that works with the demo. Most of those who are into FMs already have the game anyway, those who want to get into Thief usually start with the OMs anyway, and those who want to try something taffy for free can just take a look at the Dark Mod, which is completely legal due to Doom3 engine's open source release.
There's really very little to be gained from this. The audience who'd have an interest in standalone Thief missions is miniscule. And if that audience likes what it plays - hey, they'll probably buy (or pirate) the Thief games anyway so they can check out even more missions!
