Quote:
Taffy was a Welshman,
Taffy was a thief;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a piece of beef.
I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not home;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a marrow bone.
I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was not in;
Taffy came to my house
And stole a silver pin.
I went to Taffy's house,
Taffy was in bed;
I took up a poker
And threw it at his head.

I think MIT had already started force-feeding humanitites to students when a lot of the LGS team members were there. So it's a safe bet that someone was exposed to The Bard at some point.

While I have no doubt that some of the staff are fans of the Bard, we have definite proof that at least a few of 'em are fans of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Where do the G & S references come in?
Oh that would make a wonderful FM: incompetent singing pirate robbers!

Song of the Caverns. Raoul sings a few pieces from various G&S works.
You could also say they're fans of Gaston Leroux's
Phantom of the Opera.

Et tu...Benny...?
To be drunk...or not to be drunk...hmmm...there is no question.
Once more unto the bars, dear friends, once more,
Or close the door and let us drink Throvian mead!
In sobriety there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility;
But when the taste of beer flows in our mouths,
Then imitate the action of the fighter:
Stiffen the sinews, summon the others.

I suppose the LG team had some plays handy for when they did the Hammerites so they could get the language right and it might have given them a few ideas to throw in for dialogue.

And they had to be fans of Tolkien!
Pagans speak Gollum/Sméagol-esque, and the Apebeasts even more so. The treebeasts are like tiny Ents.
We already know what fans they were of Lewis Carroll.
And at least one of the writers was a fan of the King James Bible and old time hymnals--at some point!
