The portal stops anything behind it being rendered, just like terrain. So in effect it blocks the AIs' vision, but it does it because there's nothing for the AI to see. The main benefit is for the player because polycount is kept down.
The Blocks Vision property does what it says, but everything behind the door is still rendered for the player.

I wish the portal stopped AI from seeing dead bodies behind doors. :erg:

Based on what Robin said, it should since the dead body wouldn't be rendered. Thanks for the explanation, Robin.

I did a quick test, and the AI can never see behind a standard door, regardless if it starts open like the way I first described and regardless if you then close it, when in fact you'd then be 'opening' it according to Dromed. Also, the AI cannot see a dead body behind a door. Not trying to justify doing it that way, but just out of interest.

Thanks for testing, it's funny how much we all think we know about stuff like this, only to find out you're wrong.

I've always experienced the opposite. AI's can see dead or KO bodies through closed doors. I tested it and the guard played the "found body" concept and opened the door to investigate. I would post a video but for some reason my fraps isn't recording audio while playing through dromed. :erg:
