I'm about 2/3 through Thief DS now...rather significant changes from previous versions :tsktsk:
I have one recurring technique problem...when climbing walls or ladders, it seems impossible to jump or mantle to a nearby horizontal surface. I'm trying to do things which would have easy in T1/2.
Is there some trick to this, or is it just not possible? I'm stuck in the clocktower now...
Thanks

I think it's just a matter of location and timing. But yeah, you're not alone. The Clocktower's notorious. There's a place in there where the player can get stuck, and thankfully, I didn't find it when I played.

You cannot really do a (

But left aside ladders you can't jump down somewhere and catch yourself at a trim. By the way, this is one of the harder things to do in reality.

OK, thanks. Now I'm stuck at the bottom of the upper clocktower (with the two hammer mages on platforms). Anyone remember how to climb out of there?

When I played, I went ahead and got the climbing gloves, and so, was able to leap to a wall and grab on. I wouldn't know what to tell you if you don't have the gloves, but it has to be possible.

Why climb out, isn't the exit at the bottom anyway? Maybe i am thinking about the wrong area.

You can continue the game by going out the corner passage. There is no reason to go back up unless you missed something you think you need (loot for example).
If you must go back up, go to the corner where the machinery is on the floor SE or NE corner, I forget. Mantle up, then walk the pipes around to the other side, and check as you go, there is more than one way to get back up to the platform opposite the elevator where you came in.
I usually do a drop to the walkway on the west side (the one with the moss arrow on it). Then jump to the wall and climb above the window. If you then do a JUMP BACKWARDS, you land on the walkway near the Mage on the west.
Then go back to the tower, climb up to the level of the platform that faces the elevator. Get on it, open the grate, climb the ladder and you end up in the mech control room just below the barracks area where the elevator is.
