What if it is life - not Martian life, but Terran life which hitched a ride on our space probes and whatnot and has managed to survive? Apollo 12 brought back Streptococcus that had been on the fucking moon for 2 years and were still alive, and the moon is a far more hostile environment then Mars is.

Has there been a science fiction story about a ship landing on earth and the aliens flying away disappointed there was no life here either yet depositing a germ? Surely there must have been during the golden age but I can't recall it.
