If I was misunderstanding anything, it would most likely be your idea of what combat was.
My view of combat in an rpg is how you attack or what you can do in a fight, all the mechanics involved with the battle system or ruleset, & what tactics you can employ to win a battle specifically. What you seem to be referring to, at least from my view point (correct me if I'm wrong), is extremely crappy Dungeon Master-ing. Trash mobs fall upon the DM or, in this case, the developer who set them up (namely Bioware with BG1&2). Quests/Sidequests, villian placement/type, IMHO... all fall into the narrative (story or flow if you prefer) of the game when it comes to videogames because their main purpose is to keep it moving along in one way or another. The combat system doesn't really change for these games... only who you're facing.

Nedan, while I haven't played all of the RPGs mentioned by Jason Moyer (I never really got into Wizardry), I've been playing them since the mid-'80s, and I wish you'd stop talking about "true RPGs", because that kind of normative crap is, well, crap. There are big differences between The Bard's Tale, Ultima VII, Fallout and Icewind Dale. If you find a coherent definition of "true RPG" that adequately describes all of these, that's impressive, but frankly, I doubt that you or anyone can. Arguments with respect to 'genre purity' (this is a true X, that isn't) practically always translate into "I like *these* games, I dislike *those* games, therefore the dividing line between true and false XYZ falls right between 'em."

Wait... what?! You never got into Wizardry?!? Blasphemy I say! Vile Heathen! Worthless Naive! Lecherous Wastrel! Jack-booted Thug! Quick... somebody burn it with fire before it's able to mutate into the human form! ;):laff:
Seriously... I never denied it being an opinion & if that bothers you... well... (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7bHCs_iu9w) stay here & don't ever venture outside these forums. If Jason Moyer came back at me with a statement like
"Dragon Quest IV & Final Fantasy VI are the only true rpgs out there" I would salute him & say
"I feel you bro, you win, & more power to you" in response. :cheeky:

The problem is that for the purpose of discussion it's a pretty useless opinion, unless you define more clearly what you mean by 'true RPG' and how this category can apparently hold games that have relatively little in common.

Dragon Wars and Alpha Protocol are the only true RPG's out there. Wrap your head around that one.
Actually I'd never say something like "X is the only true Y" unless I was being at least partially facetious.

In any case, I want to make it clear that Gone Home and Proteus are the only true walking simulators. None of that dumbed down, consolified crap like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture.

Actually considering Dragon Wars working title was actually "The Bard's Tale IV"... I can kinda see that. Good game, honestly liked it. But Alpha Protocol... hmmm. For some reason I just never played it... but my cousin played it a lot recently. I guess I should fire it up if anything.
Also Thirith... I hope you're aware that all opinions are pretty much useless for everything other than getting a little insight into how a person thinks & feels.

I don't want to derail the conversation even more, so I'll keep it short, but to my mind there's a huge range of opinions, from the unfounded to the well argued. Opinions can be more or less coherent, more or less considered. Personally I like discussions best when they go beyond "I feel that X", "Well, *I* feel that Y".

Considering the thread title... I think it's a little too late to be worrying about derailing anything. Also, don't use that mad emoji as it's confusing as all hell. That is unless you were actually serious then... ummm... never mind? Continue on... nothing to see here.

Stick with the very janky gameplay - the game as a whole pays off really well. Be careful which skills you invest in too - some are more or less useless.
