I played Planetside during the Reserves program, which let me play for free but capped my level. I just created a couple different characters so I could try out everything. It was pretty fun, but I don't think I'd be able to justify $15 a month for it.

Well you certainly managed to wet my appetite

Me too. With one glaring exception I haven't really enjoyed the MMOs I've signed up for, but Planetside would be one I'd consider.

the smaller the teams the more opportunities for strategic team-gameplay, coordination and individual, skillbased rewards for the player in the team. the less players the better according to clans and my experience testing for a hl2 mod.
the more players, the bigger the maps, the more "luck" gets to be a deciding factor, traveltime makes fights boring, the "search" for action becomes a small sidemission. I'd like to have everything focused on a certain point, assault style gameplay is the best with one team defending/one attacking imo. I hope Brink will be awesome.
The appeal of MAG would then be that you yourself steer one of the little soldier buddies you usually mow down in other games in the hundreds ? Like CallOfDuty from the perspective of a respawning grunt, running down the same hill to the same bunker until the stupid player realizes that the game wants him to cross the magic invisible trigger so you can spawn a few hundreds meter further down the road ? That's no appeal at all. Is the beta doing any good ?

No, MAG is fucking boring.

So yeah,
MAG open beta. Waiting for the player queue to fill up is boring as. Given the sheer number of players in each match it can take awhile. I'd imagine this won't be as big of an issue for the full game, since for this beta they apparently only have one server per game type.
The game seems to be lag free. It uses dedicated servers of course.
I gave Domination mode a try. It's was highly chaotic, you don't have regen health so that adds a layer strategy to it. You can either use your health hypo on yourself or team mates. Zipper seem to be leaning more towards some realism than their competitors. Eg to throw a grenade you have to cycle through your gear and equip it beforehand. There's no Halo-esque instant lobbing.
There are three PMC factions per match and each is divided into four units, Alpha through to Delta. Each unit is dynamically assigned a task depending on the situation.
Visuals and sonics are decent. I'd imagine that it'd be a real treat in discrete 5.1.
It's definitely a post-CoD4 title. You have to rank up to unlock weapons, gear, attachments, etc.
The game feels pretty soulless, TBH. I doubt that this one retain popularity and a consistent playerbase over time, Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will likely over-take it.

Well its interesting to me, not having played a new big online FPS like COD:MW or COD:MW2. I think the last online FPSs I played were Insurgency mod for HL2 and Red Orchestra:Ostfront.
I like the XP and upgrade system but I wonder if there is balance built in somehow. In my first game I didn't kill anyone, despite having a heavy MG and definitely getting multiple hits; they always killed me first. I wondered if it was to do with our character levels. It got a bit easier as I went on and spend a couple of action points (or whatever they are).
The maps are very detailed meaning they are hella confusing. In Planetside I knew where I was but I just get lost in these, not because of the size but because of the complexity.
I'm not that enthralled by it atm (at this point I prefered Quake ET) but I'll see.

It does look very much like a Tech Demo. I suppose it would be fun as an online experience(like L4D) but nothing more.

Is that the same way that EVE online and WoW would be fun online experiences but nothing more?
