I suppose it would be fun as an online experience(like L4D) but nothing more.
That was the stupidest thing I have heard all week. Get a clue.

No, MAG is fucking boring.
I rest my case

Is that the same way that EVE online and WoW would be fun online experiences but nothing more?
Hah, WoW is one of the lowest and most pathetic MMOs out there IMO so your argument is moot.

It doesn't look at all special and they're just trying to sell a gimmick here and that doesn't really make for a good game.

No you tool, what we mean is you've essentially said "that car is probably ok as a car but nothing more", like a car was supposed to be a fucking creme brulee or something.
Thing is you're such a unmitigated dolt you won't get what I mean.

I've played it for a few hours now, reached level five after seven or eight games.
I'm enjoying it. I did play COD4 multiplayer for a while, and it was good but I like the slower pace in MAG. Yes, there's a bit of travel time, but the maps never feel empty, and it's nice not to be killed every fifteen seconds. Engagements feel a little more meaningful, and the detail of the levels allows you to really use the environment to your advantage.
My main criticism is that it does indeed feel a bit soulless; more presentation is maybe needed. Although I still haven't unlocked anything past sabotage, so I can't say for sure. Headsets should definitely be included though. I don't have one and I'm constantly wishing I could communicate properly and coordinate real strategies. The levels certainly allow for that sort of thing, and I imagine once players become accustomed to the game there'll be some fairly dynamic and interesting matches.

Level 9 now, it's only getting better (you really need to put in two or three hours before the game starts to shine). Still can't communicate but the nature of the setup (four squads of 8 people per team) means that if you stick to your main objective and your squadmates aren't jerks then you'll be forced to work together. I haven't earned a leadership role yet, but I'm curious as to how the command system will play out, especially for the higher ranks. A general (or whatever) commanding all of the squads across a massive play-area filled with smaller battles could be really exciting.
I guess I'll play it until the beta expires, but I'm definitely leaning toward 'purchase' now.
SubJeff on 8/1/2010 at 19:01
I'm only Level 4 but I've been able to purchase some extra skills. The skill tree confuses me. Why are some items marked as "sniper" or "rapid" skills? And why can I not use the forward grip I purchased? My 3 loadouts are based around the 3 main available weapons - sniper, assault rifle and heavy MG.
Aja on 9/1/2010 at 04:49
Forward grip only works on the assault rifle, I think. On the rifle's specific screen in your loadout menu, there are empty slots beneath the gun. Select the proper one and scroll sideways to use any available accessories. Don't know about "sniper" or "rapid". Maybe check the training--though you can't actually train, there's a text manual of sorts that you can browse.
SubJeff on 9/1/2010 at 14:02
Yeah, I don't have that grip attachment which is why I'm
I wish I could get one of the enemy locators but it seems its not available to me.
Anyway, the more I play this the more I like it. I can see that having a command structure what only allows voice coms in squads and between squad leaders could be really useful if implemented well. In fact its a pretty exciting idea. If the game ships with a headset that would be awesome.
In the last game I played it was my 3 kill streak on what was obviously a suicide run that won us the game. A charge into the comms centre (point C) killing all 3 stair defenders with my heavy MG. Satisfying.
I've also had some very amusing sniper v sniper stalks, and my being an ebil sniper, pinning and killing people as they try to crawl away.
People need to heal the casualties more though. In most games I'll lie there refusing to bleed out and people pass me and don't bother to revive. Big mistake as it takes the spawners comparatively ages to get to the action. Oh, and how lol is it being able to shoot people as they parachute in?
SubJeff on 10/1/2010 at 00:37
Well that's that then. The beta ends today. I had fun and I may get this. I guess I should play MW2 first and see how that suits me. It would have helped if we had access to other modes and the vehicles.
I also don't know how they are going to balance matches out with the XP and all. The skills progression seems significant but subtle enough that being high level by dint of playing more shouldn't make people overpowered so you'll need the combination of real skill and a high level character to make a serious difference.
I noticed some people getting 500+XP per round. They are either very good or they are those people with leadership roles who get bonuses from the team and from the area effect bonuses they confer.

I've been in some matches where everyone plays selfishly, but also quite a few in which players were actively encouraging each other to wait to be revived. You can stay alive for a
long time in those games.
I made it up to level 15, and I probably won't get a chance to play any further before the beta expires. But I did get to try out Domination, and I can say that it feels like the closest game-equivalent to actual war that I've ever played. It's like Call of Duty except every player is controlled by a real person. I didn't really understand the objectives and at times it got a bit too disorienting, but I could see that with a properly organized team of people that know what to do and are given proper orders by their leaders (most of the squad leaders I was with didn't really seem to understand how to lead yet, either), it would be pretty thrilling.
Although honestly I did appreciate the feeling of crouching behind a rock in some barely-sheltered area, surrounded by gunfire and mortar shells and grenades, and going
fuck fuck fuck fuck exactly like I'd do if it were real-life :D
I'll be getting the game as soon as it comes out.
