Never mind any sounds: just take out your sword, pull back your arm for an overhead swing, open the door, step forward and release quickly to kill the thing before it can react.

I have surround sound headphones and still they dont help much. I will try NVs suggestion.
Well I did. Its Bulls$#@..I'm dead before the door is even completely open. Thanks though. A big Ebert & Roeper thumbs down for this one. Sorry. Thanks to the mission creator anyhow, I enjoyed very much what I played so far but I aint fighting these guys. It isn't worth the aggravation.

I had the same trouble. What I did was open the door then hid to the side, jumping up and down, getting some attention, then when I went back to the room, it was empty! :weird:

I was mostly feeling the (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1602229#post1602229) same as NV. The trap just before the treasure room was the only high point of the mansion part. (Don't blame the mission author if you can't
hear 3d sound. It's really a clever trap. And that's just a fault in your hardware/drivers.)
And going to hell elicited a huge :bored: . Then as I was expecting poorly lit (i.e. too dark where I needed to see, too bright where I needed to hide) rooms with ridiculously strong enemies (YADR -- figure it out... the 'R' stands for "rip-off") But it turns out there really was just enough shadows to let me sneak and I didn't have any difficulty seeing. (Or is it just that, after playing Island, anything looks brighter?)
And congratulations, this mission actually managed to spook me. After opening a portcullis, I quickly jumped through as a tree haunt turned his back... and stopped a hair's breadth from a quick death. Welcome to the E.A.Poe memorial hallway. Of course, it didn't give me any trouble after that and I wondered what would happen if an AI tried chasing me in there. And most of the rest of the mission that was fairly enjoyable tense sneaking around.
Thing is, after grabbing the talisman, the only way I saw to get back was a mad-dash. I took a deep breath and started running, passing right in front of at least four tree haunts.... And none of them chased me. If I had known they were so blind it wouldn't have been nearly as tense. Knowing that, there's just not much point trying to replay the mission. (Even without having to endure the awful mansion part.)

jeez you guys, it wasn't THAT bad.
Lightningline on 7/6/2007 at 03:14
I did not think it was bad, as a matter a fact this one did actually spook me and had some great ideas implemented into it but the super fast swordmen were just too crazy fast. They killed the fun for me. I couldn't even see the guy killing me. I think the author would have done this mission better by maybe making them very hard to kill instead of so fast you cant even ...like I said , I couldn't even get my sword in the air before being speed slashed let alone get the door open. I even tried what slugs said and stood at the side of the door to open it and they came runing out like they could see me through the wall. One of them was trying to run through the door before I even opened it. Maybe there will be a version 2 with something a bit different.

I think you guys are being too tough. I thought the mission was great in terms of being creepy and making me jump. The music and sounds really helped the mood. I was on the edge of my chair the whole time. The frequent use of the "cheap scare", including the fast swordsmen, who sometimes attacked and sometimes didn't, just about had me pinned down and afraid to move. The architecture was crude, to be sure, but that did not detract from the game play. A good Doom wad still works for me. Well done. :D

Should there be some kind of a system?
I just opened all doors without getting seen and the guards vanished. And I don´t think they are meant to fight...
Just finished this mission. I liked it. It was creepy, straightforward and maybe a tad to easy. I enjoyed it. :D
