I usually use glowing cloud deck tiles lined up with the moon, but it doesn't look very good:

I've tried a couple of things but I haven't got very far. Any suggestions?

In the OMs that use the cloud glow feature, it doesn't look that bad. Try toning it down, and/or increasing the subdivisions of the cloud deck.
If that doesn't work, perhaps add a glow to the moon graphic itself.

Thanks for the advice. I looked at the cloud deck settings before but kept getting odd results. E.g. strange spikes coming out of an otherwise perfectly good glow. I went back and re-read newsky.txt and the bit about 'glow tiles' finally twigged.
