Haha, I nearly resurrected this but since the reviews were so dogshit I've predetermined I'm unlikely to ever see it.

I've seen the movie and... well it was just horrible.
They took characters, locations and plot parts randomly from the game and mixed them with bad acting and bad writing.
After watching the movie I started wondering why pretty much all game based movies end up like this. Then I realised it, the audience is always underrated and seen as a horde of brainless nerds who are satisfied with something that only little resembles the game's story and world. Movie producers change too many things, invent their own little plots and rely on flashy visuals and ridiculous action.

It wasn't shindlers list. but it wasn't earth girls are easy either.
I think the negative reviews are mainly from burnouts who can't help but be way too cynical.
I thought It was great. There are some moments around the beginning of the film that were a little weak in the acting department. but it was a hell of a lot better than Either AVP movie or Doom. It could stand on its own without the video game. aside from 1 or 2 shots that are supposed to remind you that max payne had bullet time.
And their depiction of What Valkyr did to people was slightly different than in the game. But it was friggen Masterful.

Not an endorsement of any kind whatsoever.
I said it would suck.

I thought this would suck from the beginning, but the trailer actually changed my mind for a bit. Guess I should have trusted my instinct.
The guy who designed that trailer should get a raise.

I'd say watch it first then decide. I don't really trust critics anymore.
The only reason I used AvP and Doom as reference was because they're videogame movies.

It is really simply due to the fact that no actually talented directors or writers want anything to do with video game adaptations. Eventually though some talented film makers, who play/played games, will emerge and then we might see some good video to game adaptations. The 'Prince of Persia' film actually might have a chance of being good since it's being directed by Mike Newell who, while not being a Scorsess or anything, has actually made some really good films ('Donnie Brasco','Four Weddings and A Funeral', 'Harry Potter and The Goblet Of Fire' ). As soons as a couple of good video to game adaptations are made it will validate them and I think you'll see talented film makers from non-gaming backgrounds giving them a chance much like is happening with comic book films.

I think the main problem is that, by traditional media standards, all games have shit stories. If there was no such game as Max Payne, and you went to a movie studio and pitched:
"It's a film about a cop whose family are killed by drug addicts, and after going undercover to investigate, his partner is murdered and he goes on a vengeful rampage, killing hundreds of New York gangsters, to shoot his way to the truth"
they'd probably laugh you out of the building and maybe give you Steven Seagal's number.
In games, story doesn't matter, because it's the presentation and design of the interactivity that makes or breaks a game. By removing the interactivity and making a movie, all you're left with is a paper-thin narrative.
That's why the only half-way decent game-to-movies are things which take the setting and create a whole new plot, like Resident Evil, which is an OK film, but only because it's got almost nothing to do with the games.

Doom is, AVP isn't. If you think it is you obviously never saw it.

yeah. you're right. but I was close. the Comics predated the Jaguar game only by 2 years.
