Well,
I love this game!I'm only halfway through (<font style="background-color:white;color:white"> back in NY, on my way to sink the superfreighter...</font>), but I think this game is now added to my top 5 favorites. (It hasn't pulled ahead of Thief - the game that is better than Thief hasn't been conceived of yet...)
I was on the fence about whether or not I wanted to get it, since I don't generally like the "shoot-em-up" types of FPS, but I loved System Shock 2, and many of the taffers in the Thief forum recommended Deus Ex, so I bought it. I'm SO glad I did.
I've noticed that not a lot (or any that I've seen!) of the lady taffers have made their way over here from the Thief forums -- am I the only one playing this game?
BTW - LOVE that sniper rifle...

Definetly better than thief..
I didn't like all kind of zombies and stuff in thief..
I only wanted to steal and meet humans

And don't let any of the talk about it sinking halfway through scare you. I'm way past the half point now and it has changed pace but not for the worse at all. I still find it to be very challenging and fun. The supertanker level was fantastic. When I first walked out on the ledge and saw it I was like "WOW" that's a big damn boat. It felt so real. I love the way this game is put together. It's absolutely huge. Puts Half Life to shame in my book. More characters, cooler interaction, more interesting locals, cooler weapons, skill levels, stealth tactics, good story, hacking computers, interactive environments, the list goes on.

Hey Hanse, welcome to the fold! I think it's great that the community of Thief fans is willing to branch out and talk about other cool games. The TTLG community always seemed about much more than Thief or SS2, and as we move forward in the post-LGS era, I hope we'll share new games together, in addition to Thief fan offerings. I was bummed when Lytha got pissed about the Deus Ex thread on the Thief board. DX is very different from Thief, but a blast in its own way.
As far as grrl taffers go, Alessandra was here alot at first, but she seems to have fallen off the face of the earth.

Personally, I thought it got even better after the halfway point. The top-level vision aug is
so nifty. It would have been nice in Thief.

http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif The game caused me to totally neglect friends, family, everything, until I finished it. Well... Everything except for feeding my little fuzzy audience.
You've got lots to look forward to, Hanse.

I was just like you, Hanse. See my early posts re "Will I like this game?" I knew a lot of the TTLG regulars were dying to get their hands on Deus Ex but I thought it was more of a Warren Spector worship thing. From the description it just didn't seem like it would be my kind of game (fantasy/sci-fi). I am so glad I got it. I just finished my second time through (in about half the time it took me originally).
Post your impressions here as you go through the game, okay?

Here are my impressions so far (I just got to Paris and met with Jaime...):
I should begin by pointing out that I am playing on "Easy" first time through (because I didn't know what to expect, and as I noted before, I'm not really good at combat situations...). Some of the things that seem somewhat ludicrous I assume are better on the harder settings. I am referring here to the fact that the AI forget about you about 10 seconds after you are out of their line of sight, and after the alarms stop. (which I love -- the fact that the alarms actually
stop...) It's fairly amusing. But again, I imagine when I play on the harder levels, this will change. I think I am a little bit fearful for the "realistic" setting. Even on "easy" I get smoked pretty quickly when trying to take on 5 soldiers at once...
So what do I love about this game? Well, I love the characters -- JC is an awesome character, and I was quite depressed when his brother Paul was killed. I really hoped he would make it out. I like that you switch sides halfway through. I like the relationships you develop with other characters - I feel so involved. I felt guilty after asking Jaime to stay at UNATCO as my man on the inside, and was really glad to see him in Paris. (C'mon, Hanse, they're
computer game characters...) And I bet I wasn't the only one who refused the kill the UNATCO troop who worked the front desk at UNATCO HQ -- he was so cheery all the time -- I only zapped him with my stun gun. I like that there are apparently several different ways to reach different objectives, and that the conversations are each different according to how objectives were reached. That means a lot of replayability. I like hacking into security computers and personal computers and ATMs. I like being able to hide in shadows (hey, I am a taffer after all) and take those MJ12s out with a sniper rifle (OK, maybe Garrett wouldn't do
that).
What don't I like? Those freakin' ladders - although I think I am getting the hand of them. I think my problem is that they are almost completely the opposite of the ladders in Thief. (What do you mean I can't go down this ladder facing out? Why do I fall off every time?
Inline Image:
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif) OK, so I can't think of anything else at this time that I don't like about this game. I think I can probably accurately predict that I won't like when I've finished it. I know that I'll play it a couple times through, but there's nothing like the first time through a game...
More reports later...

"...you are forgiven of all you may have done up to this day, Hanse. You aren't a quintuple murderer, are you?" asked the prince.
"I've never killed anyone, Highness," said Hanse.
"I have! This very night."
"Pardon, Highness, but killing's the business of them that rule, not thieves...," replied Hanse.

Try saving Paul next time. It might just work.
Hanse on 26/7/2000 at 00:04
You have GOT to be kidding me! See, this is just what I'm talking about -- it seemed to me that Paul dying was an important plot point, and now you're saying (well, hinting

I think the ladders are nearly perfect. Easy to get on easy to get off. I don't climb too many ladders backwards in real life either. Anyway after having many crappy ladder experiences in other games I find these to be flawless. T1 sucked for ladders. T2 was better but there were still places where you could get stuck on one and have to jump to get off creating attention attracting noise.
