Me and The Cradle - this won't end well... - by Motley Fool

As is said. There are old pilots and there are bold pilots. But there ain't any old, bold pilots.
Be a coward. Ease through doorways after taking a good peek. Stay back from an open door or archway and move left and right to see through at an angle and as far down the hall as you can without being seen. LISTEN LISTEN LISTEN.
Stay in the shadows until you hear nothing, or until the beastie is well gone. If needed. Find a shadow and wait and watch them go by and return. COUNT THE INTERVALS to get an idea of how long before they return.
Sneaky can get you through the Cradle without firing a shot, using a FB or even facing the beasties. Use the CROUCH tap tap tap walk mode to inch your way past a seated or stationary beastie.
If nothing else, THIEF will teach you patience OR KILL YOU. :D
As an example: In the first room after the caged area across the courtyard from the main building. Go to the left to the corner by the fireplace. Mantle onto the fireplace mantel. Ease across and slide down the other side. Then ease through the door into the next room, or if you feel brave enough cross to the right to the wall between the two entrances to the lobby where the admitance desk is, and climb the ladder. The seated beastie will never see, or hear you if you are sneaky. And the route is nearly in complete shadow.

Listen to Blackman. He is very wise and experienced.

Backstabbing in an odd corner is always a useful thing to do.
Alternatively, to use up less ammo (you'll need some flashbombs/holy water/zombie killing device to stay alive in the crypts afterwards, theres no way around that) and you really dont want the zombies to get up again, backstab them and chuck a flashbomb/holy water. This ensures the zombie isnt facing the bomb (or you'll need to use 2 - adds up to give you far less by the time its over) and that it isnt aware of you (or you'll need to use... erm.. a lot of flashbombs)
Also, NEVER try to kill the staff with your trusty dagger. Not sure if this was a bug or something, but when I tried it, as soon as the staff turned to dust I died. Probably something I didnt notice killed me from the side, but still, its better to be safe than sorry. Especially when it comes to the cradle.
Another tip for making the cradle more/less scary is the viewpoint your in. If your in first person its FAR more scary than in 3rd person. In 3rd you can see its just Garrett thats being killed slowly, not you! In 1st the emersion is far greater and it feels as if its YOU who is being killed slowly, because your looking through the world as someone, not as a floating invisible camera.

I appreciate the tips, Blackman and Cardel. I'm sure it will give me a few nights of bad (or zero!) sleep, but I'm determined to at least give the Cradle a good TRY. :) (My absolute last-ditch backup plan is to load a saved game from the end of the level, and proceed from there, but I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that.)
I've patched my game a bit to make it more like T1/T2. I've removed the sepia-tone and humming from Garrett's zoom-eye (so it's more like T2), and I've increased the number of arrows he can carry ('cuz, dude - if he can haul around 50 pounds of candlesticks, goblets, and fine art on his back, he can certainly handle a few dozen extra arrows.) That should allow me to prepare for the Cradle a bit more.

You know, I just discovered this yesterday on my own. I was running away from zombies in
the Fort Ironwood catacombs
and accidentally switched to 3rd-person perspective. I was amazed by how the situation suddenly and instantly became
less scary. In 1st-person mode, the zombies are attacking
ME! In 3rd-person mode, I'm watching a movie of zombies attacking Garrett, which isn't nearly as terrifying. I wouldn't have expected the perspective to make such a big difference... but it really did.

Yeah, first time I played through the game I did it all in 3rd person, I didnt realise there was a 1st person view. The second time I played it through I did it in 3rd person till i got caught and locked away in pavelock, where I was pressing random buttons in my cell, I found that i could switch to first person. Well, I got out and started going through the missions again, and when it got to the cradle, I was like "AAHHAHAhharrghhhhhh!! I dont remember it being THIS scary!!"

I just
went through the catacombs with the girl, the hammer haunts terrified me
, before that I screamed like a little girl when I fell into the graveyard and got chased back to the door by the damn undead.
