Speaking of Japanese games, I would absolutely LOVE a sim-style Code Geass game. Given the existing style of the anime you could get away with a slight mod and reskin of Armored Core.
On the western end I really miss the Mechwarrior series. 3 in particular I enjoyed because of the salvage system that worked similarly to the old Earthsiege series. I also don't know if anyone recalls, but the series also had a thriving league system where teams would manage their territory in a manner similar to online "space empire" games except that the results of battles would be determined by live matches between the teams. These I enjoyed because I became the third best pilot on my team, coming in after a guy who could destroy anyone using a thor and another pilot who was infamous in the league for his signature mech was a vulture loaded with missiles. On my end I quickly got a reputation for being able to destroy anyone I got into a close range fight with as well as being the best PPC sniper on the team.

@henke: an oculus rift mech sim could be amazing not sure how it'd work with a complex control scheme though.
I'll have to check out the Heavy Gear games. I had seen them but never played.

Some savy indie studio should make an officially licensed Robot Jox sim. I'd play the hell out of it.

Big fan of the Heavy Gear franchise here (started as a tabletop game), but the games have not aged well IMO. That said, they're an interesting variant on mech games, since Gears are a lot smaller than something like a Battlemech, and the whole setting has a very modern combat sort of feel. There's no trading volleys of missiles a la Mechwarrior, one solid hit from an AT gun can cripple or damage you, and the missions are very 'spec ops' themed. They're worth checking out, if you can get them running.

The second game being the better of the 2. It also features a territory control game mode very similar to what Tony_Tarantula said about MW3. Though I think that was completely singleplayer oriented. That said I only played a little of that side of the game.
If you love Mechwarrior 2 though. Play that. Feels VERY similar. Just smaller mechs.

I haven't played Mechwarrior 2 since the nineties. It'd be good to hear "All systems nominal" again though. I'll see if I can get it up and running.

As you wish, if not exactly how you expected:
