Which do you prefer and why?
Personally I love the Hammers. Their true brutality and cruelty was justified in the Cragscleft Prison level from Thief: The Dark Project, and it would be hard to top that. Having said that the Mechanists were just as evil in the Dark Project with their horrible mechanical robots and metal children. Such horrible creepy imagery. I have to say there's not been a more evil cliche in gaming since then.
So The Mechanists get my vote.

The Mechanists really didn't know Karras' motives. Remember that Karras sent all of the Mechanists away from Angelwatch the night he was going to destroy the city. They weren't even part of his plan. He would rather have all those robots as followers than real men.

The Hammerites are a lot more 'real' in a sense then the Mechanists.
Although, I do think it would be best to take doctrines from both and put them together.
For example:
The Hammers fire and devotion to the builder
The Mechanists unity of men and women
The Mechanists ideas of progressive technology. [Well, that is the GOOD technology, not the kind that reduced living things into carbon.]
The Mechanists aiding The City Watch
The Hammerites excellent craftsmanship
Just to name a few.
With these together, I think that they can establish common ground, and help with the good of man

Well, a lot of these reasons may seem trivial, but here they are.
[Hammers]
1) The Hammers have better uniforms. (In my opinion)
2) The Hammers never tried to destroy The City.
3) The Hammers have some room for plantlife, although they still prefer iron and stones.
4) The Hammers help Garrett in TDP, in the strange bedfellows level.
5) The Hammers have cool names.
[Mechanists]
1) The Mechanists have a multicultural and multi-gender society, meaning more variety.
2) The Mechanists gave Garrett his Mechanical Eye; a really cool and often useful invention.
3) The Mechanists use technology to put Karrath Din to use.
4) The Mechanists have cooler weapons.
5) The Mechanists co-operate often with The City Watch in TMA, even though the Hammers do for a time in TDS.
In conclusion, I just can't decide. It's like asking me whether I like which of my parents I prefer! But I can see that both sides have a good point of view.

3) The Mechanists use technology to try and civilise The Lost City; a brilliant activity.
Wait, what? All I remember the Mechanists doing in Karrath Din was mining/searching for Precursor masks and rust gas.

True, I'll change it.

Hammerites all the way. The Mechanists were just Hammers barely changed (ooh different color and different rock to beat you with). Although Karras is the best villain, I'd have to go with the Hammers. Cragscleft Prison is my favorite TG mission.

The Hammers were indeed in opposition to the pagan beliefs, but they respected the earth and made use of raw materials. Mechanists would rather obliterate anything natural and exalt the synthetic.
Definitely the Hammerite Order.

Thought I would point out that he was attempting to destroy the city from Soulforge Cathedral not Angelwatch.
By the way who came up with the amazing idea of "Soulforge" as a title. :thumb:

Yeah I realized that after I posted it and was too lazy to edit :P
