From what i can remmeber in the dark project, at the end before he has to enter the Constantine's Realm (trickster's realm) he had the hammerites forge a fake eye (portal idol not garret's mechanical eye) that a small faction of hammerites created.
I from what i can rememeber, beleive in the start of the mission garret was stating that the he has recieved a exact copy if the Fake eye created by mechanics in the hammerites to be swapped out for the real one. I don't recall the exact words but here is where the 1st mention of the mechanists is made..
In the metal age, that same faction broke off & started to convert the old age (hammerites) to the new age (mechanists). The hammerites had a civil uprest in their factions. Karras wanted all to convert to the mechanists. The starting of the mechanists story line is explained in the 1st part in the of the game. but threw out the Metal Age you witness the hammerites complain that the master builder will not stand for the disruption in the order. The old order should remain pure. or something like that.
The hammerites remind me of the radical holy rollers we have here in the US.
The mechanists remind me of the factions of the new age. people who are looking for something more in life I.E. scientology, heaven gate Etc.

I think that more specifically the Hammer/Mechanist split occured over the time between Thief's I and II. In Mission II, the Hammer is talking to the weapons guy outside his shop where they talk about Mechanists bringing in more business than the Hammers ever did.

The reason Mechanist bring in more business is not because they are better than the Hammers...well at the time I think they had more members. Due to Karras using propoganda to get popularity. But I believe economically people liked the Mechs better cause they actually had to get goods and stuff from the other people while the Hammers mainly made stuff on their own.
