Merlin. Significant historical background indeed.

LoL. Beleg, it's not history for what i know. It's mythology.

It´s not historical but many writers like to theorise how the legend would really happen in real British history.
So I´ve heard a lot of histories that involve the roman´s ennemies breaching that Hadrians wall and fighting them, and that it represents a time when paganism starts to be replaced by christianity (Arthur in his quest for the Holy Grail fights with a sword gifted from the lady of the lake - so we have mages, watery tarts and christianity weirdly joined together).

Yeah, just because some watery tart throws a sword at Aurthur doesn't make him history ;)
But I see they included the black knight. Obviously this happened before the quest for the grail because he still has all his limbs :)

My imagination is ageless.
On another note, some of you need to lighten up, or have you forgotten your playing a game thats based on the same level of fiction...

Merlin sort of falls into the same 'genre' of TV as Robin Hood (the newish bbc version), Hercules, Xena, Sinbad, Andromeda, etc.
Not exactly 'historically' accurate, a bit campy at times, but it can be quite enjoyable.
Personally, I've been enjoying the series. . .apart from a hate-him/he's ok, I guess thing with Arthur.
No its not accurate by any stretch, but like the Robin Hood. . .I don't think thats what they were going for. On a whole its been pretty good, and entertaining.
My only beef with it has been the size of the cast/props. For an entire royal court it only has. . .what? 15 people? Their 'crowd' scenes are so small it sort of gives the show an air of emptiness. I'm guessing their budget isn't *that* big that they can hire extras. But yeah, otherwise its been a fun show. I liked how they brought Launcelot in.
Heck, even my dad likes the show and thats unusual. heh

The gradual erosion of the stories that form the foundation of English literature doesn't bother you at all?
In 20 years the kids that watch this shit now will teach THEIR kids that THIS is the Arthur legend, and that the shit Robin Hood show was the Tale of Robin Hood, and Gaiman's gentle raping of Beowulf is how the poem went down. There are stories that need to be treated with a certain amount of respect for the beats of the base myth/folklore/poems. Robin Hood 90210 and Merlin's Place don't just drop the ball in that regard, they stomp on it, piss on it, kick a bit of dirt on top of it, and then call their buddies to come take a shit on that.
If you watch this and enjoy it, I hereby revoke your right to have an opinion on any adaptation of anything from here until the end of time.
Elentari on 27/11/2008 at 07:17
Wow, who died and put you in charge?
Thankfully, its neither your choice nor your right to revoke anyone's rights. Just as I cannot help your obvious bad attitude and bad opinion about someone else's 'take' on a story thats so old the people who were actually involved really couldn't care less. Seriously. . .the ONLY people who knew the truth of any of the stories are long since dead, dried up, turned to dust. They -don't- care one whit what people say now. And if it doesn't bother them, why on earth should it bother you? At this point it is nothing more than a STORY. Fiction. Which, last I checked is 'made up'. Not to mention, the truth of such old stories as these has been so lost in history that there's no point in pretending *any* of it is true. The actual truth of the events was probably so changed by the second generation after it happened that the people a hundred years after did not know anything resembling the truth of the matter. Now its been over a thousand years. . .and you're quibbling over one more 'version' of it?
Seriously, if this is the biggest thing you have to worry about, I want your life!
No one with any brains in their heads watches that sort of thing and decides 'this must be how it was'. No, they know its just one take on an old story, someone having FUN and taking some artistic license. If they were to tell the same old story - again - no one would watch it. Its been told to death until there's little interest in it anymore. Its ventures like this that breath a little life into these tales and renew them for younger generations.
Are they true? No. Fiction never is. That is sort of the meaning of the word 'fiction'. Are they accurate? Of course not, that would make it all too serious. Do I find it appalling? Not at all.
What I -do-, however, find appalling is the speed with which people jump on others for liking something different than they themselves do. That is far more shocking than some tale out of a storybook being told in a different manner than normal. The viciousness of the statements is far more shocking and far from acceptable.
Now, that being said, you don't like it. Fine. That IS your right. But it is not your right to attack those who disagree and who -do- happen to want to sit back, have a little fun and enjoy things. So be good, back off and sit down until you can play nice!

LoL. Beleg, it's not history for what i know. It's mythology.
It
does have a historical background which the series apparently tries to show but fails to keep up. It's just this inconsequence. And like with all fictional inventions for every-day-life things, weapons etc. it's so easy to break even the
inner reality of a fantasy world.
Finally, it wouldn't be hard or expensive to avoid the trash. It's just (or at least to a great extend) a lack of interest. By the way, there is a German book about the struggle between Hollywood's historical movies and history/historical consultants. For those who understand it: (
