What I -do-, however, find appalling is the speed with which people jump on others for liking something different than they themselves do. That is far more shocking than some tale out of a storybook being told in a different manner than normal. The viciousness of the statements is far more shocking and far from acceptable.
Firstly, this whole everyone has to play nice and never disagree with each other thing is pretty silly really. Surely you are just doing the same thing he did by stepping in and ruling his opinion as obtuse and out of line, to quote yourself "who died and put you in charge".
Secondly, surely you must admit there is a difference between people not agreeing with what other people like, and the watering down and sexing up of one of the most beloved and traditional stories going around. As well, you have to appreciate that anytime someone takes liberties with a tale with such a hardcore fanbase, people are going to be pissed (see Lord of the Rings).

This story probably doesn't follow the original French legend, either. :nono: And it appears people have already forgotten the magic-less King Arthur movie with Clive Owen, Keira Knightly, and Ioan Gruffudd, with the pagan Merlin who was a mystic Druid, not a wizard.
:p

No, it is not the same thing. I did not say they could not disagree. I said the attacks were not acceptable. You can disagree all you like and still respect the other person's opinion. Nor is it the dislike for it I am protesting. It was the personal attacks of the replies here, and Fafhrd final line:

If you watch this and enjoy it, I hereby revoke your right to have an opinion on any adaptation of anything from here until the end of time.
That is what I object to. That starts infringing on others rights to like or dislike what they want to. Frankly, I don't care whether or not he likes the show. It is not 'silly' to tell someone to back off and play nice when they start stepping on someone else's right to make up their own mind. No one is telling him he cannot like it. In fact he can dislike it all he wants, and even speak of it. But when his opinions start crossing over and telling me what to think and that I have no right to watch and enjoy about it just because he happens to disagree, that is going to far and I will fight it.

Actually one has little to do with the other. Perhaps I should have separated my post a little better. But, in all seriousness. . .this is fiction we are talking about. Not some controversial debate on global warming. If you want to debate the best way to revamp some of the old favourites, surely it can be done without attacking other people's rights, likes and dislikes. Seriously.
And no, I never understood why people get so worked up about what is done to a story thats not even theirs. (If you were the author. . .that I could see) I mean, really, either you like it or you don't. If you don't. . .don't watch it. If you do, then great. Enjoy. But why does it have to be come a case of 'you're a loser if you do' or 'you're a rotten human if you don't'? Its ridiculous.
If you want to debate the ins and outs then do so, but do not call the person into question over it. Do not step into their right to have their own opinions about it. THAT is what I am arguing here.
So, now you know. And you can all go back to your liking or disliking respectively. You can all debate it all you like. Just. . play nice!

Merlin was in that one? I don't remember. Then again, I only watched it with half an ear. I did not care for that version at all. Seemed to lack the. . .compelling side of the more traditional stories. Made the time/land seem too bleak.
The version I like most was in the series Pendragon Cycle by Stephen R. Lawhead. For some reason those struck me as the most believable/likely version I've ever heard. I've never found a telling of them that was quite so. . .satisfying. Although, how 'accurate' or 'inaccurate' that was, could be debated. (I like to think its more realistic than most versions I've seen.) For stories where the truth has been long since lost, it was a good version.
Or how about the Stargate version where Merlin was an 'ascended being' who returned to earth, and Camelot was actually on another planet, and the knights in search of the grail were actually travelling through the Stargate? :)

Biker IS Merlin. He's enjoying the show because it's his story from god only knows how long ago.:p
Damn, my secret is out.... if only that were true, I could use my arcane powers to make the perfect Thief mission...
:cheeky:
On another note, I dont know quite what i have stired up, but lets not forget the main ingredient here - just like thief, merlin allows us to forget our crappy life for a short while while we immerse ourself in the fantasy.
for the love of god lighten up, I really dont want to see anymore bickering.
thanks

If anyone actually watches merlin and thinks "God this is a horrible retconning of the merlin mythology" then they're already taking it waaaay too seriously.
There is absolutely no way it even tries to PRETEND to be accurately retelling the merlin myth: it's just hilariously campy fun.
It fits into the saturday evening Dr Who slot, basically, and it's about as historically accurate (and about as high budget).
C'mon: it's even got a modern UK-style racial mix in Arthurian England, and it doesn't even try to explain it. What's not to love?
jtr7 on 27/11/2008 at 12:08
Is it at least more serious than Hercules and Xena?:o

If felt the need to watch an adult-friendly children's programme, with bad special effects, then I'd just watch Doctor Who.

Lol, now I remember why I don't venture into Thief Gen that often. :nono:
