I paid $20 for the original MGS3 a few months back. It was a great game and all, but the camera absolutely killed everything that was good about it. I ended up selling it to a friend less than a week later and got my $20 back.
But hearing that MGS3: Subsistence not only had a reworked 3rd person camera, but also an interesting online game and the original MSX versions of Metal Gear 1 & 2 for just $30...I was sold on the spot.
It's a damn good game. If anyone hasn't played MGS3 already, I suggest picking it up.

I remembered two things the most about MGS3: One, the soundtrack, which I promptly imported cause it kicks so much ass. Two: The pacing.
MGS1 (and, in my opinion, MGS2, though of course many disagree) were masters of pacing. MGS3's was just completely off. It's completely back-loaded. Most of the game is just sort of slow and general sneaky stuff, and there were various elements I was dissapointed in - I liked MGS2 better. But then you get to what you think is the end of the game and it climaxes and is awesome - and it keeps going. For 5 hours. It has this like 5 hour climax that is just insanely awesome, and judged by itself is some of the finest gaming I have ever done. And so yeah, it really would have been better if the tension in the end could have been spread out throughout the game, but it definitly is worth playing just to get to that quarter or whatever it is.
And yeah, I have subsistence in the mail - the original camera never really bugged me but I figure this will be better and I have been meaning to replay - the two MSX games were the big draw, but other stuff (new secret theatre movies and demo theatre!) is attractive too.

Hell, I'm buying it just for Metal Gear 2. I'll probably pick it up tommorow or Saturday :)

That's how I felt about it at first. I kept trying to play it like Thief and I kept getting disappointed. You do get used to it, but if I had known that they were going to add a better camera, I would've returned the original and waited.
The storyline was pretty good, but it's SO melodramatic that sometimes you can't help laughing at the serious parts.

Yeah, it's a real mixed bag...parts of it (again, the ending) work really well, and parts of it (pretty much all the scenes with Snake and Eva, for instance) are just wierd- I got the impression there were translation issues, though I would find that suprising for a game with the American audience in mind as much as Metal Gear.

Hmm...the camera never really bothered me. It just didn't.

So you didn't care that 95% of the time you had absolutely no idea what was in front of you or behind you or beside you?
It was like, hm that's a nice path I'm standing on oh shit and the guy two feet in front of you is shooting.
Also, the parts where you have to find a small room full of cardboard boxes and wait 15 minutes for the evasion meter to run out really sucked. I probably gained ten pounds playing this game for the amount of times I got up to get a snack.

Yeah, I know that's what it was like, but I enjoyed it in spite of that fact. The camera didn't show me everything, but I don't remember myself getting mad at it (I guess it showed enough for me). I will concede that the waiting did get annoying, though. I really got to know the caution music well.

The new camera makes for a totally different experience. Beforehand I'd constantly make short jumps from grass patch to grass patch just so I could go into first person safely to scope out what was in front of me...and I'd still end up getting spotted by enemies I didn't see that were only barely offscreen. It was tedious as hell, and made sneaking nigh on impossible.
With the over the shoulder perspective I can tell exactly where the enemies are in my general area without having to stop to switch back and forth between view modes, and sneaking around is more a matter of patience and planning ahead than a hit or miss experience. It really does make it feel like a whole new game.

Awesome. On this statement alone I'll trade in my old copy and pick it up.
Not that I didn't enjoy the previous one, but to play it again and have it feel fresh? Awesome! :D
