They're confoundingly simplistic, to the point where you may need a guide to tell you what to do next. The first more than the second.

Metal Gear Solid 3 is next on my PS2 to-play list; I'm currently playing Persona 3 FES, though, so it might still be a while.

Metal Gear 2 was actually surprisingly good.

It helps if you know that you're not supposed to take it too seriously; and it helps doubly if you're not allergic to postmodern metafiction. It's not a coincidence that there are allusions in the game to Paul Auster's
City of Glass (although some of the PoMo in the game is a bit heavy-handed and doesn't necessarily gel with the more sentimental bits).

I always took MGS as comics, story and personages -wise.
So far, I like MGS3 more than MGS2, more complex and more possibilities. Overall, I really like the game, it's just that it has too many chatter and movies if compared to gameplay time (even if MGS2 possibly was worse in that regard, I haven't played MGS3 enough yet). Attention to details is amazing, yes, but the sandbox in not big enough to make the game absolutely perfect for me.

Are you referring to the MSX game or Metal Gear
Solid 2? Thirith apparently thinks the latter.
Anyway as to MGS3... sandbox? Metal Gear?
Sandbox? Goddammit.

I would like it to be.

You're playing the wrong fucking game if you want a sandbox.
Sandbox. My god.

In a related topic, I found a patch that reenables hardware mode in MGS1 on pc. I am whole again.

I'm not arguing against that, though I do think the existing MGS games are just fine as they are.
I've wanted for years to see a MGS game set in Chernobyl and CoD4 proved it wasn't too farfetched an idea.
The Middle East is another possibility- Liquid Snake served in the SIS and SAS and saw action in Gulf War I, and I think it would be interesting to see a young Liquid.
MGS3 though is certainly the closest to what you're looking for. I dare you to try and complete the game without being spotted- it's extremely difficult unless you plan ahead and know the environments like the back of your hand, because they're large-ish and very open areas compared to MGS1 and 2 and you'll be forced to rely on your camo to stay hidden.
