I disliked the fix camera in MGS2 already. It (the free camera) is really a blessing in Subsistence. As for the controls, apart from the carbine ironsight aiming (press R1 for FPS, then Square lightly to ready the gun, then L1 for ironsight, then Square strongly to fire? Riiiiight...) thing, it was fine. Though that Circle/X thing gets me too when switching back to MGS after another game.
Btw, how did sneaking work with the fix camera in Snake Eater? Just curious - you sneak with the dpad which allows for movement in ... eight directions, right? So how do you precisely follow a guard that doesn't patrol in one of those eight direction? With the free camera, all I ever did was press forward on the dpad, and steer myself after the guard and it was fine.

D-pad for movement? I've only ever played MGS with the left analogue stick.

Yeah, but the anague stick is for running and walking - the dpad is for the third speed, sneaking: "Causes Snake to stalk slowly. This is even slower than walking with the left stick, and uses just as much stamina as running, but enemies will never hear you approach even when you're just inches away. " I use it to sneak up on people.

Poorly.
It also didn't help that you couldn't see fifteen feet in front of you without constantly switching to 1st person (of course all the enemies could see you just fine).

In all fairness, that's only for Snake Eater and it's not that needed either. It makes Snake's footsteps entirely silent, but even though walking with the stick still alarms guards, CQC can knock them out before they can react.
Though I do think the analog stick for the original MGS is a bit too sensitive. I can still only play that with the D-Pad.
I don't know, folks. Even though the fixed camera shows its age and shouldn't make a return, I think the games that were designed with it in mind (1-3) work better with it. The free camera in Subsistence alone kind of kills the purpose of having a backpack full of different sensors. Ironically, MPO would've benefited from a fixed camera, too.
