I like the look of this, but without a demo and with my already massive backlog of games, I can't justify the spend. I'm sticking it on my wishlist for now & will keep eyes peeled for a sale. (spoiled by Android/iOS prices & Steam sales :erg: )

GiantBomb had a pretty good (
http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-miasmata/17-6845/) Quicklook on it as well. Seems like it focuses heavily on exploration and charting out new areas as well, mapping out the island through triangulation.
I'd love to hear from someone who's actually played it as well. Looks like the kinda thing I might pick up in the Xmas Sale.

A couple of hours in and I really quite like this.
It's far from perfect, and the performance ain't the best, but it's got a couple of neat mechanics that really work together well. The research mechanic is pretty basic (find plant, pick it, bring it back to lab) so the main meat of the game is exploration and navigation which is complicated by a couple of things. One, your map is not automatically filled out as explore, not does it show your location. To find these out you have to use the cool triangulation mechanic and it's very satisfying to get high up in an unmapped area, triangulate your position and fill-in a large chunk of your map. The other thing is you can't just run around willy nilly. You get tired, plod up hills and will slip/topple end over end if you're not careful. It takes a little while to get used to (I do think the skidding is a little touchy on flat surfaces - basically don't try to circle strafe ever and tap backwards to slow your descent down steep inclines) but it makes navigating the island that much more interesting and leads to some great moments: just before I was faffing about in some ruins when I heard the telltale heartbeat (my own) alerting to me to the fact that 'The Beast' was in the area. I was halfway up a fairly steep hill crouched in long grass and it was down at the base. It couldn't see me yet so slowly crept backwards up the hill, being extra careful not to slip because if I did, I was going to pretty much fall directly into its clutches. There were some heart-in-mouth moments when I almost lost my footing but I made it to the top. Then I did a quick triangulation and sprinted like a madman through the trees, skidding all over the place, to the nearest hut in the opposite direction of the beast. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that all of this was in the middle of the goddamn night.
Still too early to say anything about the story but exploring the various huts for notes/pictures etc is scratching that ol' System Shock itch.

Color me interested (the RPS write-up was fantastic), but not @ $15. Waiting for a sale.

Sorry for the thread bump, but curses. It's been on sale on Steam this weekend, but it didn't occur to me to flag it up here until now. I'll try to be quicker off the mark next time.
It's a great game, at least for the first 20-25 hours gameplay (about 80% of the game), which have been the closest I've come to recapturing what it felt like when I played Thief for the very first time - when I didn't know how much leeway the game would give me, didn't know all the things I could do to escape if I got it wrong, and I just felt so exposed and helpless. Miasmata takes that feeling of character vulnerability and cranks it up relentlessly and beautifully.
It's not perfect, and the limitations of the game design did eventually get a bit irritating, but even so - amazing game.

This does look pretty cool. I still wish for a survival sim like this for the first mission to an alien living planet, because then you really don't know what to expect coming, but this has a cool hook to it too.

I did not love Miasmata, only played 3-4 hours of it. But for the current price it's defenitely worth picking up just to experience some of the unique things it offers. What I did like was how genuinely terrifying it is. Proof that enemy designs don't matter nearly as much as making the player feel vulnerable. I swear to God, when you're walking through the woods in the black of night with only a torch to illuminate a few meters in front of you, and you start hearing the heartbeat that signifies that the beast is nearby, it's almost enough to make a grown man shit his pants. So, uh, yeah, get it! :thumb:

I really enjoyed this game until I realized I had forgotten the first reagent I created behind on the loadout tray … in a tent, somewhere … 20+ gameplay-hours ago … :o
I don't know if they ever fixed the glitch, but any attempt to create the missing agent a second time was ignored.
And it was ESPECIALLY hard collecting the necessary ingredients with *Milo* on full alert!
