I must have missed something very important!
[spoiler]I read the scroll at the beginning and got the Front Door key. This led me into a street area with a baker and a magic establishment where I picked up a scroll (there is also a button there to summon a priestess to kill you).
I was able to get into a small jail that has only one ape, in the upper level. He had a note from some other ape saying that I was going to pull a lever to open the lower jail cells, and that when I did, this chap should run. I pulled levers in this small (upper?) jail, top and bottom levels, which opened the six jail cells here.
I found a pair of gates; I could go around one, but the other was locked and unpickable (and the key I have doesn't work). I saw an area east of the upper jail that included a well of some sort with a ladder leading down, possibly the lower jail. But I can't get there.
I found a building (mortuary?) with a pickable door; it had a pair of zombies in the basement and a lot of loot. The zombies faced two directions -- one toward a small workshop, where tombstones were being made, and one toward a warehouse area, which I can't get into without alerting the zombie, I think, so I skipped it for the moment. (Is there any way to turn off that flickering light?)
Edit: I went back and knocked the zombies down just to look; there's nothing in the warehouse I could find but a gas arrow. Reloaded; don't need it, can't use it![/spoiler]
Nobody's had a key to pick, and I can't seem to get beyond this point. Help, what did I miss?

You're missing what I missed the first time I played this. [SPOILER] Did you notice a guard walking along the front of the jail building before you went in? He walks down to the far end and disappears. There's a walkway down to the lower jail right at the far end and that's where he goes. You need to, as well. [/SPOILER]

Here is what you should do.
[SPOILER]There is a lower jail that you need to get to. Go around the right side of the upper jail down the alley. Sneak into the lower jail, pick up mines/gas arrow. pull the switch and wait. There will be a battle. You should then kill teh guards and explore.[/SPOILER]
If you already did that then....
[SPOILER]make sure you go into the back room in the lower jail and read the book. You will get new objectives and a key. Follwo your instincts.[/SPOILER]

I've gotten quite a bit farther; I stole the eternity talisman, and now I'm in the treebeast area looking down at the spider area with the dead guy.
Here's my prob: I've been ghosting so far; it's been tough but doable. But it looks like I have to drop down in here... and there doesn't seem to be any way to do so without alerting the stupid spiders.
Is there any way to shut off those glowing mushrooms, or is there any way to bypass this (outdoor) room?
Edit: Ah, never mind. I killed the spiders to take a peek further along, and it's spiders, spiders, spiders all the way. Plus apebeasts that need either killing or conking. Either way, my ghost is toast.
I'll shift to the "don't take any damage" mode instead...!

Got a problem. I'm up a tree (literally)!!! I swung around on some ropes, climbed up to the tree tops, knocked off the ape at the top and now I'm stuck, I can't find anywhere to go. Where is the ape village?

[SPOILER] Come back along the branch, climb down the single vine and follow the tunnel South. Cross the rock bridge then Rope up. Go round the first pinnacle and jump down the hole into the water - there is still a fair way to go to the ape village. [/SPOILER]

I've got 3 talismans, and as I read the previous posts should now go to the beginning for number for...
where is the main gate key? (as I presume that's the exit from the mansion to get back to the beginning?)
