I'm stuck at the beginning of the mission. I knocked out the guard. He didn't have any key, got the talisman of darkness, crossed the gate, killed two archers and now am sitting in front of another gate with a guard and some Hammerites patrolling. I snatched a key from them. But that's about it.

I reckon you're going the wrong way round!
Read the scroll near the water wheel at the start point - it tells you where the key is.

[spoiler]I reached the part where an ape put a explosive charge on a cell an ape was imprisoned in, the ape in the cell then walked through the bars and then the 2 apes got into a fight with the 2 guards there. I can't get the scroll inside the cell, where the ape was because the explosive charge doesn't blow open the door. [/spoiler]

That's strange! The bars usually get blown right off! I don't think the scroll is important anyway. I remember playing around with that in the beta because you can pick up the explosive before it's detonated. I thought it might be a bug but it didn't stop anything else from working right so it made no difference. [SPOILER] Just head into the other building and pick up a couple of keys, then keep exploring. [/SPOILER]

I'm at the end but seem to be missing half the GEM requirement.
And I just checked the gate at the beginning and [spoiler]if you stand in the right spot you can frob the lever on the other side of the wall and open it.[/spoiler]
