Ok, I'm making a new thread because the old one is all sorts of dead and bloated.
Minecraft has finally been "released". News of its arrival has been washed out by the current Yogscast vs Notch drama. That and Skyrim.
In any event, a group of my friends have decided to put up an actual server for hosting MC. We've actually purchased a hosting provider for this particular purpose. You are all welcome, it's a brand new 1.0 world, and it's whitelist only so PM me or post your name here if you want to get on.
The address is mc.necival.comCommunityNow, I have some interesting ideas about how to moderate this community, but they are currently still in debate. As of right now, the only rule is no mods (no flying, sorry zombe).
I'll post my ideas for the community later, but basically I want an open ended society that is ruled by majority. The community will be the tribunal, the server admins (myself and Necival) wont "rule" or "enforce" the law. We will simply be a proxy of the communities majority will. Initially community discussion will be forum based but Necival and I want to make a web portal for the purposes of moderation/voting/etc. The generally idea is that A) Entrance to the server has to have some sort of check. No random people. I was thinking of a vouch from existing players, which carries the weight of responsibility of said players actions. B) Disputes will be determined in trial by combat. Screenshots of the results will be required for community voting on the conflict.
The idea is that everyone will have their own free will, so long as it doesnt conflict with the majority rule. Irreconcilable disputes will be determined by organized combat, and the results of which will be enforced by the community.
The reason why I want a community like this is because I find arbitrary Dos and Donts of certain servers to be a bit bland sometimes. If I feel like burning some dicks house down, I should be able to. But I will have to defend myself, I will be judged by my peers, I will be challenged by my victim, and ultimately, I might pay the price, and so will those who vouched for me. I feel as though this sort of environment would be most conducive to parallel societies within the game, guilds or whatever you want to call them. The ultimate reality being factions fighting over territory, guild wars, etc. Also, I enjoy the conflict of form over function. I guess I enjoy the creative and survival aspects of the game equally, and that is why my opinion probably isnt the popular one. Ideas, however, such as wood vs stone in terms of aesthetic and safety take effect. A market and a bartering system can rise up, for example, with people selling useful items in trade for other useful items. People who manage large farms can trade for minerals, etc.
However, there is still the issue of a large group of people showing up and taking control of majority rule on the server. How this will be dealt with is just one of the reasons why this idea is still a work in progress. Even if you're not into Minecraft, the social implications of this are rather interesting! Any ideas, suggestions?

Server ModsCreeper explosions wont do block damage. I've had enough people bickering at eachother over this, and I dont want to be caught in the middle anymore. The block damage is non-gameplay affecting, so it goes. They will still destroy you, however. Also, because some people dont seem to get this idea, and because it is also non-gameplay affecting, I've
removed the trampling of crops.

Property!
Also, Im using LWC for player property protection. Currently whenever you make a chest it will automatically be private.
Type /lwc for instructions.This works on doors, chests, furnaces, dispensers, levers, etc.
Ventrilo!
We've got a vent server up that we use for MC and general chat. Anyone can join.
stash.necival.comI dont care if you have a strange accent, so do we! (Well kanchi and I, because we're hispanic.)
Textuers!Here are the changes I made to the default texture pack. I simply shaped the tools and weapons so that they are distinct from each other, based off of the material.

QUESTCRAFT????So, messing around with this awesome books plugin, I came up with a great idea, which brought up even more questions, which I will now present unto the community:
Firsty, a simple idea:
I'm going to write books and hide them as I travel. Put them in random locations, wherever I go. If I find a dungeon, I'll stick a book in one of the corners of the dungeon.
The books will contain either:
* A "code" for a reward *
* A map to treasure (or more books) **
* A quest ***
* Now, the codes will be simple. I will generate some 8 character codes and put them on a spreadsheet, and I'll come up with different rewards (diamonds, iron, etc) and spread them on said spreadsheet. If you find a book you can turn in the code, ie: 86vId14P. I will take this a step further by creating an "altar", at which you present the "code" (lets call them spells?) and the server will dispense the item. Doesn't seem like something too difficult to code.
[**] The maps will require a little bit more ingenuity, I suppose. Since I cant actually print images onto the books, the maps will either be ASCII or they will be riddles... You might need a map AND a code book to access some stuff.
[***] A quest. This is basically going to be a storyline type thing with various goals. To complete the quest, you must attain the goals, and present them along with the quest book to a GM.
Now, thinking about this whole quest/treasure thing, I thought of something else. This game leads heavily to be DMed. A DM in creative mode could easily create quests, dungeons, loot, rewards, etc.
Like a D&D DM, except you can craft the dungeon before hand, fill it with mobs, traps, chests, loot, etc. You can make these dungeons in places otherwise nearly impossible to reach/find until you get a quest book, or something similar. They can contain jump puzzles, creation based puzzles, redstone circuitry puzzles, and straight up pvm. GMs can put loot into the chests. Reasonable things.
I think considering the nature of Minecraft, and the tools at hand, the only realistic way of having "quests "or anything similar would be to have a GM craft them in game, weather its real time or not. What do you guys think?
So the real question here is: Do you object to a player having administrative access to materials/mobs in order to craft dungeons/worlds/challenges/quests?
In discussing it with Al, it became apparent that the dungeon areas would have to have building limitations (so that you cant use a dungeon as an excuse to make the biggest tower in the game), and would only be allowed in a certain section of the map, far away from civilization. To wit, I suggested we use Multiverse, and just host the dungeons on a completely different world, which you can teleport to from our Overworld. Ideas?
I'd like to add that another reason why I find this idea so appealing is that, from time to time, it's refreshing to build stuff in creative mode. However, building in creative mode for the sake of building something becomes flat soon as your deisgn is done. It doesnt retain the same feeling of accomplishment as building something with your hard-earned materials, obviously. However, if one were building things in creative mode for the sake of making an interesting dungeon for people to run through, creative red stone traps for people to attempt to disarm, etc, I believe we legitimize a use for creative mode in SMP that not only satisfies that thirst but also serves a purpose that doesnt detract from the games median value.
