As one of those folks who, as Bri put it, 'ran out of steam', I gotta say I'd like to try it out in survival mode online. I've logged on to the newest world a couple of times since it started, but each time couldn't really be bothered to start building, as I simply couldn't find any space. Same thing happened on the previous world actually; some dude got particularly angry that I started building near his stuff, despite spending hours trying to find a place to build without effecting anyone else. IIRC that was when accusations of fire-starting began.
Its a tricky one. I haven't properly played in weeks, and even if things changed one way or another, I simply don't know if I'd end up playing again. That said, I see putting an end to duping as a positive thing; each construction requiring a bit more work but having infinitely more value for that. On the other hand, I'd mostly want to leave the decision to reset everything to the folks that are playing right now since it is their work that would be lost. The server has become quite unfriendly for attracting any new players, as like i said, finding a space to build is a pain in the arse, and there seem to be far too many 'earmarked' spaces (X is going to build here, don't touch!). Meh, im just rambling now.:laff:

I have come to a decision. If the technology allows it (i.e. no compatibility issues), I will:
* Wait until the server beta is stable in pretty much every aspect and hMod is available for that build.
* Move the spawn to a place where the world hasn't been generated and where the new algorithms are in effect.
* Delete everyone's homes and all warp points.
The reasoning behind this is to make the world appear completely new for people when they first connect to it. I think it will be fun trying to find the 'old' world for those who still want to build there.
* Delete everyone's inventories, the contents of chests and remove a few valuable blocks completely (e.g. diamond & gold blocks).
The reasoning behind this is that if we're going to have an economy and real survival in the 'new' part of the world, a mischievous player could try to stock up on duped items as much as they could until the update, and recover their stuff later. People who will want to keep on working on the 'old' part of the world will be able to see with me on an individual basis for spawning items and blocks they had before.
* Find a date for an official launch when many people can be there simultaneously and build together. And be there more often :/
What do you think? For certain players like Box who is obviously very much involved in the 'old' part of the world, I have nothing against leaving the belongings, home and owned chests untouched. Just ask me.

Sounds extremely good,
Could we also have a completely barehanded start too, so no starting items?, it'll make the whole first startup so much more down to the bone, while people coming in later can take from the built up community chest.
punch the tree.

If we keep the current map, I would greatly appreciate keeping the contents of the chests that are in my workshop. Nothing is duped (if you've gone through my mines that's probably obvious). I'd be ok with starting an entirely new map though, if you change your mind.

A very good compromise i would say. :D
Btw, how do you remove all the stuff? Is there some helper program-thing for that?
Boxsmith on 24/12/2010 at 06:12
I would appreciate it if I could keep all the stuff in my bunker's storage rooms. There are a lot of duped leaf, grass and TNT blocks. I also have a lot of duped diamond blocks, though -- I foresaw a lot of broken/lost pickaxes and decided to save those up for crafting (not for ruining your future economy! :p), as I have a very large space to work on. If you don't want those around that's fine, but I would like to keep my forest building materials. :)

I'll look into that, but I guess it's as easy as removing the player-related files in the world save? I hope so.
@Boxsmith: It'll depend on how easy it is to remove stuff. If I delete some of your things accidentally, I'll give them back to you right away.
BTW I'm still waiting for the latest server update to switch. Also, hMod still isn't out.

Only players own backpack-inventory is in their files ... every block (including chest with their contents) is in its chunk files - pretty much impossible to eradicate without some helper program.

The game is becoming boring, it's not the same without community. If BH is going to do Survival, I'm all for his server, if that means we'll have one central community. However, I wish you'd update, I'm bored. D:
(Also public Minecraft servers are scary)

So, one server, one world, all in survival, eh?
I'm down with it.
Starting from scratch is also fine by me.
:)
