@bob: we made our own tracks.
How is the lag? I know that travelling that far a distance screws up rendering scenery and stuff.

Necival will be a permanent server, ever growing.

I'm not able to do anything on necival's beside move around. Can't mine, place blocks, etc. A permissions thing, I'm guessing?
(I PMed necival)

Regardling lag: I experienced on both servers that it runs smooth when you are the only one; As soon as more than one is on, desynchs happen a lot. I mine along my tunnel and suddenly blocks don't drop anything but reappear a few seconds later; That way I had to 'mine' a block several times until it finally was dead. That way I once even got stuck in ones that reappeared :erg:
(Fighting a creeper in that state is futile)
But I believe this is less of a host issue, but rather an engine issue (Beta and all).

I got on Necival's place today and 1/2 the blocks were invisible. Even after exiting and re-entering.

Hmm, that's odd. If you're talking about anodal, that hasn't actually happened in a long time, at least for me. I remember it was like that in a previous version of minecraft, but also there were more people online at that point too, so I dunno. Regardless, I know what that's like, it's rather annoying.
@Brethren:
Yes, I asked necival a few posts back to give me permission. Anodal had that for a while, then the host took it down for some reason.
Regarding things being loaded as you walk around. I read that in the 1.5 update notch is adding occlusion culling. I had to look that up to see what it meant. See (
http://http.developer.nvidia.com/GPUGems/gpugems_ch29.html) here.
Basically, for those that don't know, based on what I read and my understanding of it, occlusion culling is where performance is increased as a result of geometry not being loaded in the background that the player isn't seeing. You guys know how the current minecraft has it where stuff that you don't even see gets rendered as you walk far enough (chunk updates?) in the world? Well this new thing makes it so that the stuff you don't see doesn't get rendered.
Though come to think of it, I thought that's what the render distance thing does in the options. Hmm... I guess it only hides stuff from view but still generates chunk updates?

I had a peek at BH's server.
I finished a two way rail system from Boomtown to the Halfway tower. (That is the stairwell near the dungeon in the sand.)
It's horrible looking I know but the standard booster design would not reset for me for some reason.
This one works but needs more boosters going one way than the other.
I might do a rail to Alch's tower if I can get on without it being laggy.

When the beta update broke hey0's mod (craftbukkit's ancestor), we decided to switch to vanilla + Minecraft-Overviewer* for a while. When we saw that the performance was incomparably better, I decided to stick with it. We barely had any griefers since.
Nec', I've been wondering, do you have any idea whether CB has an impact on server performance these days?
* For those who may not know, there is a google map of the current server updated daily (
