Well I suppose I read more into that question that I probably should have. (?) I took it more as an insult because you were mad at me rather than a legitimate curiousity question. (The term elitist seemed like an attack, when you could have just said it in different terms.)

Quite deadly! My zapping challenge: stay out at night using only lightning as a weapon (using the weather mod - you can call a lightning strike where ever your cursor is at) => seen and felt their electrified destruction powers up-close often enough x_x.

In todays adventure I found my way into another huge maze like cave system where I came across my first mob-spawner, then another and even a third - and I'm not done with the cave yet.
Is there any other use for them besides the mediocre treasure nearby? A few torches to stop it and a blocked entrance to that room and I was gone.
Furthermore I found some very interesting thing I never saw in any youtube videos so far. Down near bedrock, between two lava and water streams I saw a weird thing trapped in the water. A greenish box was there, apparently trying to get to me. In a scientific manner "Kill it with fire!!!" I beat it with torches several times. After that, the box split up into four smaller versions. Mob spawners can be farmed. Whatever the mobs drop can be collected.
The obx thing you saw are slimes. The bane of any miner.

I think it's actually gotten worse. Over the past few days there have been periods of time when everyone on the server would get dropped every two minutes. I sometimes see people join and disconnect pretty much immediately because the lag makes it too difficult to play or even enter the server.

Afaik there were no network/server related optimizations in the update - only client specific thingies.
