I vaguely remember that there was a memory-leak-bug that affected 32-bit java on linux platform ... but can not find any reference to it. Did i imagine it or has anyone else seen something resembling a confirmation for it?

I've been having no problems on 64-bit Java on Linux, but if I'm in Windows, Minecraft crashes with an out of memory error after about 10-20 minutes (or less sometimes).

The server has been doing this thing lately where it appears to be up (with zero players) and you can join it, but there seems to be lag and within some ten seconds the fps drops to completely unplayable levels. I'm talking less than one frame per second here.
I know for granted this is not just a problem on my side, since my friend reported the exact same thing happening and single player mode works just dandy for both of us. Also the server is always empty when it's acting like this.

Since I put 1.8.1 yesterday, at least it hasn't crashed.
If your slowdowns happen between 21:00 GMT and 00:00 GMT, it might be the map update taking all the available CPU power. If not, does it keep doing it after you logout / login one or two times?
There's one of these map updates in progress at this very moment, because I drew the missing material in the terrain.png used by the map so I have to generate all the tiles again. If you try to login now and encounter a slowdown consistent with what you noticed then me might have the culprit.

Okay it seems that the lag is somehow tied to certain players logging in on the server, as Al_B and kuuso were playing without any problems until I joined the server, at which point a horrific lag started. This is very strange because it has been working great until very recently, the only thing that I can think of that might be causing it is the server software update. It's also worth mentioning that the only two people I know of so far that cause this are me and Slinker, both of who are in the same area very far from spawn, so if it's not a connection related issue it might be some form of map corruption that's happening over there. Again, it was working without any problems until yesterday (I think).
If there are any warp style commands available I can test out the map corruption theory.
UPDATE: I managed to get myself killed and respawn, which fixed the problem, as long as I don't get near that area again. So yeah, definitely tied to location, which is rather strange because it's an area that we have been building at before without any lag.

This is strange. So far, I haven't had any real lag issues, apart from perhaps local FPS lag. My buddy hasn't even gotten on the server (I think, I'll have to double check), because 1.8 lags his game too much. (He told me minecraft was really laggy for him in singleplayer.)

I finally managed to get on a couple days ago and had a helluva time doing anything. There were a lot of weird draw issues as well.

Can you send me the coordinates? I'll try to check it out.

Pink stuff while drawing lines in the distance? If that's it I had it too. Just make sure forced anti-aliasing is turned off in the video card options (probably only ATI-related, so the Catalyst Control Center). If it persists, change the anti-aliasing filter in the list to something else than box. Apply, restart Minecraft.

Lots better now, thanks.
