Mine is down but dirtywings (some of you remember her) and I have been talking about setting it up again once MC 1.3 is out. Donations are welcome -- I had to shut down because the money ran out.
Oh, and Fett, from what I understand Minty Fresh Creepers might cater to your kids. It's mostly populated by kids, so...

Well, if you have a second computer, you could always set up a server on that computer and then just shut it down whenever no one is going to be using it. I know a friend of mine had set up a server (and we connected through us both having hamachi) to play and did just that.
You could also look for servers that have server side plugins and have active admins such as the PC Gamer server. Last time I jumped on there I was welcomed and they had a ton of signs in the spawn area to tell you the rules. Isn't there a server list up on minecraft.net?

I have neither the room for, the equipment for, or the connection speed for, running my own server. So that's right the fuck out.

Adding to dethy's response and as an active member of the Minty Fresh Creepers MC server:
Yes, it is full of kids, also a bundle of teens and a bunch of adults like dirtywings and myself. I wouldn't say there is non-stop cussing or anything, BUT the kids/teens do get riled up at times and some drama ensues.
Mind you, the admin's a decent guy that runs a pretty tight ship, he also has some mods to watch over things. It's a very active community, but there -are- a certain set of rules to follow before joining the server, also a "trial" period, so to speak, before they become full members. I recommend you go (
http://mintyfreshcreepers.net/forum-6.html) here for starters because they need to become forum members (one account per kid) and make a small intro thread. There's a neat little template which makes posting an introductory thread a snap.
After that they head into the server and type /rules so they read the rules and if they agree to them they have to contact Moparx (server admin) in the MFC server asking to be an Entrant (the trial period title), that is if he's inside the server in-game or supervising it (give him a shout to see if he's about), otherwise they might have to come by later. At this stage they pretty much can do most regular MC stuff except carry buckets until they are Citizens. After becoming Entrants they have to come about half an a hour a day, or so, for one week so they can ask Moparx to become Citizens and can use buckets.
The game has a lot of cool mods installed and also features an in-game economy, it's very neat, and as long as you're not griefing or being annoying or some such your kids should be ok. I could even ask a few of the regulars there whom I hang out with (yes, I'm already famous, or infamous, go figure ;D) to help your kids should they need it.
Again, a LOT of kids and teens there, so attitudes are a-plenty and tempers occasionally flare up, but it's usually ok.
Ah, if your kids do sign up they can put me. MrDuck as a referal to the server :)

Tangent story, speaking of kids and Minecraft. On one overnight leg of my flight over to Thailand, there was a Thai mother & Thai-American child (I'd say 10) who were very chatty, which was nice because they were nice people & it helped pass the time.
Then I noticed the sketchpad of the kid had a lot of Minecraft things on it, not least the word "MINECRAFT" in the center, so I started chatting with him about it & he lit up like nothing else. He went on and on about all the things he built, all his stories, all the mods & YouTube videos he likes... And I knew enough of the game to follow most of it. But what made him happiest ... he hadn't played MC in over a month the whole time he was traveling, and I just happened to have my laptop that ran it.
So I let him use my laptop and build in my local world, and I showed him around all the world I built, then he took over & built his own house on an island across from my house, and had a torch path so I'd know how to get over to it. It's not even online so he can never see it again... But I think he was just ecstatic to play his favorite game in the world and build something. Rare to see a kid that happy. It was a cool kind of thing, I think. Now I can pass by his house occasionally & remember how easy it is sometimes to gratuitously brighten somebody's day just because you can.

That's a great story, dema. :D

Seconded. And yeah, I am up for more MC. Let us know if anything gets going and I'll gladly chip in.

Anyone besides Gunny interested in playing on a new TTLG server? If only 2-3 people are on board, we're probably better off just joining an existing server somewhere else.
Shopped around a bit on MC hosting, we could do something around $10-11/mo that would give us enough for ~10 players or so, with around 750 meg of RAM.

Can't beat that (RAM upgrades on my server are much more expensive) ;)
I'd be willing to throw a few bucks in it, even though I'm not sure I'd have the time to be a regular.
