Wow - that's annoying, but these things happen. Getting the world back would be great if possible but if not then we'll rebuild.
If you need help with a remote backup then let me know. Setting up one that's automated and differential should be fairly straightforward and I don't mind storing it here.

I have a remote and incremental backup server+script already, I just never adapted the script for use with Minecraft. I'm doing it right now.

Agreed. I'm kind of used to wipes already (first for MP though). I also hope that biomes will be added soon (mapgen change -> probably worth a wipe).
If no backup surfaces - new world is fine. (kind of OT: found a sweet map a week ago [nr: -579503273965005755]. Very good for singleplayer at least. Swish-cheese MOUNTAIN for home base near spawn [99,64,36]. recommended.)
Unfortunately, have not had any time for games lately. Hope notch adds something - easier to find the incentive to "make" time.
