Not a child of the 80's I take it...
was born in 86, im guessing your talking about Ronald Reagan, the man who stole my name. And got to do what I want to do. I still say we should nuke the moon(to flatten the surface) then use our high powered lasers to burn the image of a creeper on it.

I just realised... If we have portals to Hell, shouldn't we then have a SINGLE one created down the depths of a cave somewhere.
So we can minimise any ghast damage. Perhaps making the room out of obsidy?

Is that how it works? I imagined we could just pop in and out of hell at will rather than having static portals. Haven't been keeping up with new info for a couple of weeks so I'm totally out of the loop.

To sum up portals/Helll:
To build a portal, you create a frame out of obsidian, and set the enclosed space on fire. A corresponding portal will be created in Hell. In hell, one block is equivalent to a chunk (16 blocks) in the main world. Walk ten blocks in Hell, exit hell 160 blocks from where you entered.
Hell will have six new block types (I think. Maybe only five), all but one have a special property of some sort. One block type will burn forever if lit, and is likely necessary in crafting lanterns.
Hell has Ghasts, which are the first large monster type we've seen. They're 4x4x4 jellyfish that fly and shoot exploding fireballs at you. The last time he mentioned it, Notch had not yet managed to kill one.
There <strike>is another, unknown monster type that is</strike> are also zombie pigs, which are much less dangerous.
I think that's it.

That actually sounds great, thanks for the explanation. Even if it's not a requirement I'm going to make a habit of sacrificing some chickens during portal construction.

Notch had not yet managed to kill one.
Hence the idea of any portal areas surrounded by obsidy.
Or we could just warp home or to spawn. Assuming it does not crash on us. :tsktsk:

I decided to explore the island before it get eaten by the new world.
I've set up warp points for some interesting areas.
pirates_cove : An island with a large enclosed area.
Squareville : Looks like a chunk error made this.
sand_lagoon : So much sand.
oceanic_point : Bobby Darins 'Beyond the Sea' fits in this well.
quarryton : A massive hole in the ground. Big trees.
treeson : These trees are HUGE
weirdsville : A zombie dungeon right on the mountainside, and a water cave that is blocked by a block of leaves.

More warp points to look at... (Hello Boxsmith!)
caveton : A small hilly water inlet with caves in all directions.
megapeak_falls : several mountainous peaks with large waterfalls coming off one.
plussy_point : A cave hole with a plus symbol in it.
gravel_point : out in the middle of the ocean, the stuff below water is mainly gravel.

I visited all your spots, cool stuff. :) Although I think Squareville looks like the lagoon from the movie The Beach.
