Notch just tweeted that SMP damage won't make the update. Same goes for the torch change. On the other hand furnaces and stairs will now face the player when placed, and stairs won't do any random shuffling after the fact.
The update should hit in the next three hours!

So I guess we can avoid another wipe this time around, since we can use fast-travel methods to reach new biomes, or should we wipe?

nether or not wont affect our need to wipe, it's the biomes we would want, and without fast-travel initially, even more so needed.
