I didn't mind them (and liked the Koopa, really) because I knew that people on the server were new to it. You have to understand me, after months playing Minecraft and seeing 8-bit pixel art in Minecraft on every fucking Creative server, it gets a tad boring :(

Slightly OT, but kind of interesting.
About all gameplay changing mods / fixes / etc (also: no support != ban):
So, in fact a large portion of their modding subforum is illegal by their own rules - interesting. While legally notch is on solid ground - morally (you must play it his way or fuck off) i call shenanigans.
It's especially stupid considering Notch himself has no problem taking those mod ideas and putting them into the actual game. :smug:

To be honest, as it stands right now flying around is not to much of a problem (although anything built like this will always be inferior to a 3 stack of dirt placed by hand without it) specialy for really large projects and hard to reach areas. But when damage / duping bugs / and other exploits are removed I do hope you do not update it to work with the game.
Taking down flying does not bother me - taking down recipes (and similar stuff) does. Will definitely update the mod (just for myself - unless requested) - when a time is right for RP, will not use it nor other mods in MP - obviously.
Wondered what the situation is at official modding subforum - stats from threads in first 4 pages:
* resource modifications *
texture-packs : 62 (not included: 1 thread listing a shitload of texture-packs)
skins : 2 (!!! only!?)
sound : 3
* client code modifications - illegal per rules *
non-gameplay changing : 13
gameplay changing : 66 (including fix for leaves)
gameplay changing - that notch was interested to include in a future version : 1
hacking tools : 5
requests for gameplay changing mods : 7
bugfix : 1
thread about my flyhack where someone posted an alternative link to download it : 1
* server code modifications - accepted now *
server side mod : 2
server side mod requiring client changes : 1
* other *
tools : 26 (mostly mappers - including thous that detect ores and other players in real time etc)
malware : 1 (anything that fucks with your system without any reason)
other: 57 (help requests, maps, wrong forum, idiots etc)
threads asking where my recipe mod went : 2
My English is not good enough to argue with them - only thing i can think of is to force the issue: give a list of all major mods that do the same thing as mine or are clearly much-much worse (including all the modloaders, that are required for bazillion mods, that provide less convenient but functionally equal services as my recipe mod +MUCH MORE) - demanding takedown.
... um ... what if they DO take down? I have no reason to think they won't. Would really hate to lose some of them. That, and it looks like that they plead for ignorance to protect against-the-rules activity (look stats). :/
I will probably just forget it.
Anyway - found some nice mods while counting the stats (all client mods). Testing them for a while :D

Exactly, I can understand if they want to take down the cheat-mods, but taking down the stuff that really adds some wonderful stuff to the game is just counterproductive.
Texture-mods started the same way, people taking notch's equally much copyrighted art and modifying it slightly by opening a closed file and changing its contents.
And even though the code-modding is in a gray area, there's not much he can do, he's dealed in a diplomatic way with pirates before, but now he's not going to deal diplomaticly with people who actually paid for the game and could even bring in more customers with the mods.
It should be enough if he says he will not give any support to a modded minecraft or can support mods for minecraft in its current form until he adds it properly himself.
And the minecraft forums on laws and such are just skewed anyway, there's no copyright laws in place on stolen artwork or so, you're free to copy whatever you want until the creator specificly goes into every thread and tells them not to, and then that even takes some time.
I'm for modding.

I haven't been following this issue but it seems completely crazy that Notch would have anything against mods. The whole game is basically about having fun messing around. Getting in people's faces and dictating to the community how they should all have fun seems to go against the whole philosophy of the game.

Well, they are recompiling parts of his code and redistributing it, which is basicly not legal, and he cannot fully embrace that modding, but he should just done what he said, say he didn't like that and say he wouldn't look that way.
Saying that he allows people to change his code and redistribute it opens some doors he doesn't want to have open. But I'm not even sure where the thread-deleting came from.
However, much like pirates he'll never be able to do anything about this.

What do recipe mods do?

They add more things to craft.

Al, some of the guys have been talking and we've come to the conclusion that the LGS logo has gotta go. It was fine on world 1 when spawn was so far from town but we don't feel it's really necessary to put it in every time, it looks kind of tacky, like a holdover from creative mode. It's also in the way of a major project to renovate the spawn area.

It's gone. It was originally a tribute to the link between LGS (and by extension TTLG) and the server but I agree that it's probably now entering into the realms of 8 bit pixel art.
The latest world seems to be far more cohesive than the last and some of the buildings that people are putting up are very impressive and although different from the "Alpine Estates" of the original world it's approaching that sense of community again.
