Taking a break until BH is around, since the next thing I'm working on involving lots of harvesting. Can you let me know if/when you delete my player data?

Is it just me or are arrows just bouncing off stuff right now?
Your arrows do, yes. At the moment, the bow is useless.
However, if you happen to run across a skeleton, you'll soon find that its arrows work fine, with the added benefit of being completely unregistered client-side. So you'd never know from looking at it that it's firing arrows at you, until you start taking damage seemingly for no reason.

Yeah, no. I'm here to build a thriving little Minecraft town by the shore with no fear of harassment from anything other than stupid fucking chickens that wander around and catch fire. I don't want to have to put everything behind a wall and put 6,000 torches everywhere. The separate server concept sounds solid to me.
But somehow you're mistaking the current messed out version as how survival multiplayer would be.
There'll be no problem splitting up servers, but eventually the non-survival one will become quite empty as more and more features related to survival is added, food, weapons, armour, lights, fishing and harvesting, all related to monsters, getting hurt and survival. Heck, even explosives are directly connected to the ability to kill creepers and gather the dust, and spider silk to ropes?
(ps. back into the kitchen, the creepers are at the wall, and we need more defenders given birth)

Frankly, I can't wait to enter this new brave world. It'll be tough, but those of us that stick around will finally have to form a proper and coherent community for survival and such :D
Oh Notch and BH, hurry, plz!
:D

I think you're wrong about the server emptying out, Eldron. But I guess it's moot since my opinion clearly doesn't matter. Everyone apparently wants survival, and I just want a safe space to create. I'm pretty obviously in the minority here.

I want SMP to work, at least. Exploring caverns and risking death to plunder underground treasure is the greatest enjoyment I get from this game. It's dodgy at the moment because latency makes fights awkward and bows have no effect at all.
Maybe once Hell and working arrows are implemented, we'd be able to put together a team for serious Hell exploitation.

Box, if you don't mind losing your inventory, I can reset your character from the server database.

I put my inventory away in a chest. :)

Well you said it yourself, you're a bit in the minority.
But you can pay people to protect you, or build stuff for them to do that.
As you previously said, you wanted to have a good working city somewhere, running nicely, survival would make it so that people work even more together, and have the amazing ability to build some fantastic things even though zombies are knocking at the gates each night.
If anything a properly working survival multiplayer will bring everyone together in some really fun coop ways.
Also yes, I volunteer for the eventual hell expeditions, we'll bring plenty of hellstone and lightstone back for the colony.

So how many times do I have to repeat myself before my point finally gets across? I don't want to have to pay for protection or any of that nonsense. I don't want to have to build walls around everything and have 6000 torches/lanterns everywhere. Maybe some people find that fun, but if that shit gets in the way of my construction projects then maybe I ought to just quit coming to the server. Everybody wins!
