TBH alot of the thrill of this game comes from finding new areas and the first in game month or so in building up enough stuff to survive through the night.
I revently downloaded the Mo'monsters mod for my single player game and i just have to say.... HOLY #$(%#^$@(#%#.
the game had increased in difficutly by a factor of 30 and let me be the first to tell you. DON'T BUILD ON THE GROUND! the first night my first shelter(and the guy inside) were demolished by an Ogre. i spent the rest of the night running from Wolves and Werewolves.
I really hope that at some point these 2 mods can be used on the server. untill then i just dont think theres enough challenge. Between the warps and /home commands theres no reason to be out at night. theres no threat of death when your behind a single block thick dirt wall. And add to that the resources that have been plundered from old world and its just not challenging enough.
(Unless i start putting the pvp part of damage to use, looking at you tanz.)
Mod 1= Mo' Monsters

Mod 2 = Biometerrain Mod
(

I know that multiplayer versions of these arnt out / working, but I have a dream. and that dream is to be watching from my vantage point as tanz is running around below me trying to avoid imminent death by ogre. Muwahahaha *cough cough cough*
Anyhow, these are my opinions and i hope that Notch adds mod support soon.

Well, I guess I have the unpopular opinion here. I'd rather keep what we have, there's just so much cool stuff we've got! It'd be a disappointment to lose it all. Unless of course you (BH) can just keep a backup copy of the world file(s) and send them to who wants them?
I'm with you on this, I'll even go as far as to say I don't really see the point in continuing to play right now if a reset is coming soon. I guess if I want peace of mind I should just start a single player world, but I tried that during Alpha for a bit and I was beginning to bore myself after a day or two, SMP is just more fun despite it being buggy (this is probably one of the few games I enjoy which really needs multiplayer).
If we absolutely have to reset sometime, why not wait till the game is 'finished'? Hopefully then the server tools as well as any add-ons or mods will offer more choice and it'll be less challenging for the server side software to cope with a large map, lots of people exploring simultaneously (and using boats and minecarts heh) etc..
Those mods look awesome, although I'm unsure if the Biomes mod introduces more variety to the landscape in general, as opposed to being able to generate a variety of types of particularly landscaped worlds (or in other words, it can create a river-rich world and a floating mountain world but not a world with both types of scenery, or more variety). But atm I don't think it's enough to warrant a reset, or at least we should try to keep resets to a minimum.

The server world has been wiped twice before. Once by accident and once by, as far as I remember, a common demand when the official biome update came out.
The main gripe with the current world would be the fact that it dates back to when many people commonly used a now fixed duplication bug to have infinite materials for building and there were no monsters to worry about. Some of these buildings and resources are still available around the old spawn point. I don't know how much of these materials have been made use of but I can understand why it would cheapen the experience a bit. I would never want the world to be wiped without at least a very clear majority agreeing to it, of course, but I wouldn't personally mind it either. To me, Minecraft is always at its best in the early days of a new world when the land is fresh and inspiring, resources are scarce and players are forced to work together more than would usually happen.
To answer your question on the biome terrain mod, as I understand it plays with exactly the same world generation parameters as vanilla Minecraft, so in theory you can have the same amount or more variety you would have without it. If you install it, but don't change the settings, it will keep generating worlds according to exactly the same formula Minecraft originally does, so we wouldn't be losing anything interesting that Minecraft would normally be able to generate unless the settings are radically changed. It would be possible to, for example, just rise the biome size a little to make deserts larger than sandboxes and allow it to place those sweet biome-specific trees without touching any actual worldgen options.

Yeah, I agree about the old stuff still being around, it feels as if we're trying to live up to it, plus it can never be certain when people are using stuff from the old supply.
I would be down for a COMPLETE wipe. We all start from scratch, which would cause us to be more community centric as surviving on your own would be difficult. It would be more like Necivals server, where there were starter kits and we all pitched in.
Also, if we are going to do a wipe, I definitely think we should use the biome mod with the settings used in that video, I'm sure they're available, in fact I'll do the research. Edit: HERE are the settings used in the biome video (
http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=93573) the video I'm refering to is below:
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bngGp_3ru94?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bngGp_3ru94?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
Mo'monsters also sounds interesting, I'll look into that as well. Edit: Ok so I just looked into Mo'Monsters and it looks awesome. I love how the werewolves are docile during the day and then transform with the full moon. We could keep it clean by slaying them when they're innocent...
Honestly, I think we should take these mods into consideration to make a custom TTLG world that has more to offer than the vanilla. Necival is definitely looking into hosting a server with both mo'monsters and the biome mod, so worst case we can just have two servers again and people play where they want, but I rather not segregate the community again. Why don't we put up a poll? It's not my server so I'm not going to put it up, but I say there are several questions to be answered:
A) Should we do a complete wipe of the existing server, and start from scratch, so that it's true nonduped and we all pitch in to make a community, instead of making individually castles.
B) Should we include the biome mod to have more interesting and varied terrain?
C) Should we include mo'monsters to have more interesting and varied monsters?
D) Should we include both?
E) Should we just shut the fuck up and leave things as is and play with these things on Necivals server?
The more I read into these two mods the more they appear lock and key to an amazing experience. It just seems like the natural progression of the game. I want natural rivers, waterfalls, mountainsides, valleys, etc. It would be great of materials were based off these natural events as well. IE: Gold should be found in natural rivers. Gravel at the riverbed.

This game has some incredible potential. It feels like Ragnarok back when it was open beta. I knew I was in on something big, and four years later the only reason I stopped was because it was detracting from real life. I see a similar growth structure to this game, and I hope we can be on the forefront of the features and have a damn good TTLG community. It's not like we have much else to play anyway. At some point we should even split into waring factions, and sneak over to enemy towns/castles at night to steal some item of value. Some sort of CTF.
Such as in RO, you could take over a castle, and every night you owned the castle, you got money and items. In this game instead, it should be some item, and we can build crazy defenses for it, and every day that passes with that item in the possession of a certain faction, they get a point, or materials, or items, or something. I have big plans for this game. I hope Notch does too.

I must say I do like Alch's vision.
C'mon, guys....sure, boohoo....my grand masterpiece/fortress/penis goes away, but that just gives me new room to build a BIGGER one!
:D
Of course if we could all agree for a wipe, we would have to determine -when-, so as to ensure a future 2nd wipe is not in the near future.
gunsmoke on 11/1/2011 at 00:21
Meh. This is getting absolutely retarded. I built something in a spot I chose with care and spent weeks building it and the adjacent mine. Do what you want, but I can't take this shit anymore. I am tired of losing the shit I spend so much time on. Just give me some notice at least, I want to take some video of a couple spots.
The Alchemist on 11/1/2011 at 00:30
Relax, this is a democracy, and good chance is most people don't agree with my point of view, your stuff isn't going anywhere. This is why it's just a suggestion from an outsider, and it might not even make it to a poll, because BH might completely disagree with me. Calm down, your stuff is safe, for now. If this is not what you're looking for in the game, that's fine, this might be the common opinion, in which case I'll have to take my silly aspirations elsewhere. Also I believe it's possible to include something like the biome mod or mo'monsters mod WITHOUT wiping the server, if that is a large concern. New terrain will be generated as such.

The essence of balance is detachment.
Or I don't take Minecraft seriously enough to be attached to anything I build. I'm extremely aware that anything not in single player could be lost to a sudden server disk failure, unfair ban or other random crap. Starting out is more fun than being all kited out to me, anyway. Sadly, I don't really have the time to play anymore. :(

To be honest, wipes and such were to be expected purely based on the fact that the game itself has just now moved out of Alpha. There's going to be changes and I presume, if a new world would be started, it will be wiped at some point in the future again. At least when the game hits retail.
