It wasn't written to be able to handle the billions of players he wound up with. He's working with some professional web devs to rewrite the back end and make everything happy again.

If this downtime does end up being because of switching the server to the new backend, I fully expect the relaunch to be accompanied with a video of Notch apologizing while dressed as a monk.

Maintaining an admin todo list (http://anodal.org/minecraft/) here. Only light scripting is left, hardware issues are sorted out for now, as well as map export and wrapping the server code (I'm using (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1012&t=23340&sid=d3ef2f253bd29015215b03d59349776e) Hey0's server mod).

Nah don't worry, setting up a minecraft server is a lot of fun, and I don't spend as much time on it as you would think. Though I spend more time sysadmining than playing, at least until every single thing is automated :cool:
