I finally had some free time, and got bukkit working on my server. pretty cool stuff. I'm not sure if BH has made the switch because I cant log into his server now? Anyway some basic plugins I'm running ATM: Multiverse (which is actually just multi-world... nether!), Minecart Mania (although I havent tested it), and Essentials. A few others that I don't remember off the top of my head now.
multiworld seems a little glitchy. i got warpgates to work, but some reason when i type spawn or home, it sends me either underground or to the nether world, even though i repeatedly set both in the normal world. let me know of any other glitches.
to manually tp between worlds use:
mvtp [WORLD]
current worlds are:

world2
NECHER
necival
please only build in 'world' for now. NECHER is the nether world.
anyway server IP (if you dont remember/never knew) is 174.48.25.28
default cant build, so I'll have to set each user to builder or mod as you join. mods only have 4 more commands than builders as of now, but i'll be fixing the command permissions tomorrow.

Ok, I know everyone got disenchanted just like I did by various problems the game had, but heres to hoping we can start to spark some more interest:
Necival has dome some heavy digging into the Bukkit mod and has accomplished the following:
When you log in, you log in to the New World. This place doesn't have agro spawns as far as I know, it's meant just for building. Duping etc is frowned upon but the only reason why is because of what I'l explain in a moment.
There is an area that has 4 portals. 1 portal goes to the "PVP" zone, which is, obviously, for PVP. You go there, it's cause some fucker wants to wack you dead. There is an "Old World" zone where you can go visit the old structures you built on the Necival server, the "Mobstar" (dont know why he called it that) portal that takes you to a creative area that DOES have mobs enabled.
This allows us the dynamic of choosing the rules we wish to live be. Want to play peacefully and make stuff without worrying about mob death, play in the New World. Want to risk a tougher life, in the frontier, with not much to shelter you at night from the howling of the undead? Go to the Mobstar world. Want to revisit the old haunts? It's there.
The PVP world will also have a colosseum soon for orchestrated duels.
Now, I wanted duping to be enabled in the purely creative areas but theres a reason why we cant: what you have in one world, you take with you to the other. This turns out not to be a terrible thing however, you can safely build your home in the safe world, wrack up on supplies, then go hunt creepers in the deadlier places for their gunpowder, or just to go on journeys to find a good place for a fortress out there, where the evil dwells.
I think this opens up the realm of possibilities where people can all enjoy the game in their own format, and also you can chat with eachother from world to world.
So here's to hoping this addition will bring you guys back in, and we can all start building again, and play survival mode when we feel like it, pvp when we feel like it, work on our old projects when we feel like it, and enjoy the game from every angle. I'm pretty excited anyway, I hope some of you are too.

We'll I'll be....that does sound quite enticing.
I didn't got disenchanted with MC, I simply needed a break. I can never play -too- much of one game, unless it's a long game with a goal (i.e. RPG), but shit negro, that sounds awesome. I just hope it can attract a considerable crowd, since playing with peeps was definitively a good 70% of what made MC worthwhile when the sp got dull.
Yeah, I'm down with that, I might be popping up soon, but I want the crowd to come back in also, w00t w00t!

I went through 1 of the 4 portals(no labels) at the spawn point and was sent to the arena, and now can't get back. There are no return portal and no commands work.

The portals are labelled so its strange that you couldn't see them, also there is a return portal but I'll have an op transport you.

It was a day or 2 ago that went through it. I went a short time after the 3 labeled portals were removed, so the 4 portals didn't have any labels yet. I must have been teleported before the arena spawn location changed because there aren't any portals where I am at, unless it's hidden.
EDIT: found the portal and got back, but the 4 portals aren't labeled.

yea the labeling was how MV first set portal destination, then he made it command only... then he brought back the sign destination method & commands. but it seems to break the portals when i put a sign on them now that i recreated them using commands.... so no labels for now...
every portal should take you to another portal now though (except the one to the old structures, which has one nearby, but not right where it sends you).
I'm not sure why ant mentions duping. duping isn't possible anymore? i guess he meant item spawning? anyway, the rest is pretty accurate. except he also didn't to mention the nether world. yea :) nether with mobs and all that.... also, PVP world will spawn mobs too. only the creative "home" world is mob spawn-free. its 4 worlds total.
I should mention that I accidentally `rm -rf`ed my /usr/lib/python directory on the server.... so ubuntu is not too happy with me lol. The server tower is running, but it doesn't let me log in anymore....... oops... haha. I managed to make a backup yesterday before that happened, so I should just reinstall ubuntu... but thats not happening tonight.

The two vids linked at the bottom of that article are the biggest WIN I've ever seen in the history of internets.
Edit: Also, the second vid made me think of something I had already been thinking about before, it should be possible to make a basic musket, using smelted iron, wood, and gunpowder, and iron ball bearings as ammunition. It should have great range and deadly force, but obviously limited reload speed. I hope something like this gets put in soon.
(It would also be nice to be able to make cannons that fire projectiles long range and explode on impact, or maybe even trebuchetes, however this would only be relevant once pvp and castle sieging becomes some sort of game format.) I dont think PVP would be interesting until we can refine weapons and armor anywho (+1 steel armor, +2 steel sword etc).
