It's certainly better for him as a person to reject the masses than to wait until he's being rejected by them.

Quite hypocritical of them to sell out to Microsoft after the big rant about the Oculus.

I wonder what this means for the immediate future of the game (PC version). Will Microsoft keep the dev team unchanged? Will everyone on the dev team actually want to keep their job under Microsoft? Will work on the next planned PC update (1.9) as well as hotfixes for 1.8 soon begin (if it hasn't already) with snapshot releases and devs teasing new features and bug fixes over their twitters, like in the Mojang days? Or will the game's development be on a hiatus for the immediate future while all the legal mumbo jumbo, which could take weeks or months, surrounding the deal is sorted out?
For the more distant future I wonder how much longer the game will actually get (free) updates, whether Microsoft will discontinue the game and plan a sequel with its own, more Microsofty dev cycle...
So many questions and no answers (yet). I do actually care about this game, making my SP world slowly grow as I build, collect riches and explore new lands is lots of fun. The thing is though, despite years of development and lots of major and minor patches, MC is still a quirky, buggy mess and I'd hate to see it left in that state.
EDIT: The blanket PR statement on MS' website about the deal suggests that they want to keep things the way they are, for now at least. That's what they all say though, don't they?

The xbox version is really good, in fact I would go as far to say that (minus the mod and multiplayer factor) it is better than the pc version. So theres that.

Wait for micro-transactions to be coming in shortly.

Well done, Notch & co. I cannot for the life of me imagine how M$ are going to recover two and a half billion dollars from this / how that figure came to be an asking price in the first place, but that's possibly because I don't understand the Minecraft craze. I assume they didn't just throw this amount of money away on a whim.
Just don't think too hard about the amount of gaming awesomeness that could have been created from a $2.5b budget.

There can't be that many autists left out there who haven't already bought that game.
Kuuso on 16/9/2014 at 08:36
I don't imagine knowing all the reasons for buying companies with such a high cost (aside from Minecraft, they obviously got some good talents and possibly just outbuyed someone else?), but I can not see how they will ever profit from this buy. Minecraft already sold fuckloads and the current iteration of the game can obviously grow in player numbers, but I would say the biggeste growth has been seen already (might be wrong), so if they ever wanna get that 2,5bn back, they better start gearing towards Minecraft 2 "The microtransaction version!".
Did they just use 2,5bn to regain some stance in the gaming market? It's a good PR to have Minecraft on your side, but for that amount of money? Also, Notch is so fucking rich is just silly.

I gotta wonder about how long of a lifespan Minecraft still has. It's graphics were dated on release so it's not like it's ever going to go out of style. Maybe it'll be one of those games like Tetris that never really goes away.

It's infinite legos for an entire generation of kids. I doubt it's going anywhere anytime soon.
