I've seen a few mentions of (
http://minecraft.net/) Minecraft here, but really, this game deserves its own thread. For those of you who haven't heard of Minecraft, think of it as Lego first-person real-time multiplayer Dwarf Fortress.
The free "Classic" version lets you run around, dig, (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1EO4gtFhvI) build things, and generally get a feel for the (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NszGurDUlHc) terrain generation algorithm (it even does caverns).
The alpha version, which requires a €9.95 preorder to play, includes a whole hell of a lot more features-- resource gathering, a crafting system, vehicles, (
http://www.youtube.com/user/Nizzotch#p/a/u/2/ZWhYBDmTgZc) day-night-cycles, monsters to fight, etc. This is the active development branch, so new features are being added regularly.
I have a feeling this is going to be big. According to the official site, over (
http://minecraft.net/stats.jsp) 30 thousand! people have already preordered it.

Downloaded the original a bit ago but couldn't find any active servers for it. I'd love to give it a shot sometime, though.

And now Notch is spending a lot of time on the game, which means that we're closer every day to seeing a multiplayer version of /indev.
I think you mean infdev. That's the one with near infinite land. That's really what I'm waiting on right now. Until then, I'm probably going to play Dwarf Fortress some more unless there's a really good update.

Honestly, I couldn't be less interested in multiplayer. The prospect of being dropped on a vast barren landscape to attempt to survive all alone is plenty intriguing for me.

Interesting! Thanks for this ZylonBane, I'd heard Minecraft mentioned a few times but had never had the time to check it out.

"Survival" isn't anything but fighting monsters though. I want to try some collaborative creativity. I was thinking about starting a succession game but with survival multiplayer so close, I don't see the point.

Did you buy the game? then you'd know that survival is what minecraft is all about.
the singleplayer demonstration that was left alive is as old as the creative modes themself.

What I mean is that there's really no survival aspects to it apart from just killing things. It gets a bit boring alone. Sure I could play indev multiplayer but it's just not as good at this point.
